By 2012, modern street skating had outpaced footwear technology. Skaters were grinding through toe caps within weeks, sometimes days.
The shoe was the weakest link.
Ryan Sheckler and the etnies team set out to fix it. The brief was simple: build a shoe that outlasts the skater's session, not the other way around.
BREAKTHROUGH
The first shoe where the outsole wore out before the upper.
The Marana launched in 2013 with an injected polyurethane fused toe cap and the STI Evolution Foam midsole, a first in the industry. Skaters noticed something had changed: their shoes were outlasting their sessions.
It sold out in weeks. Riders called it the most honest skate shoe ever made. Thrasher called it "the boot your ollies have nightmares about."

The world's toughest tire manufacturer, reinventing the skate outsole.
In 2017, etnies partnered with Michelin, the company behind the world's most durable tires, to completely reformulate the Marana outsole. The result: a rubber compound designed to withstand extreme friction, grip, and impact.
Independent tests confirmed it: the Marana Michelin is 3× more durable than any comparable skate shoe. Skated for 30 days by Spencer Nuzzi for RIDE Channel, minimal sole wear, untouched toe cap.
