The Swedish Sports Confederation was sick of the chokehold that California had on the market for talented skateboarders at the time, so in 1991 they decided to fund the project to create a genetically engineered skateboarder in their top-secret lab in Linköping, Sweden. They were able to get their hands on grey market DNA samples of Ray Barbee, Marc Johnson and Andrew Reynolds. Nine dark winter months were spent splicing, fusing and sequencing, until the research finally bore fruit. 19 years later the result of this experiment was revealed to the world via a inconspicuous Youtube clip. The clip went viral and by now over 340’000 people have seen what happens when modern science starts messing with skateboarding.
Most of the above is only a figment of my imagination and Abbe is not a test tube baby created by rogue scientists. But the skaters mentioned above did have an influence on his skating. So did his brothers who skate too and showed him some of the old skate video classics. This might help explain his eclectic mix of tricks from all epochs of skateboarding. A vivid imagination and disregard for conventions also helped shape Alberts skateboarding.
Expect to see a lot more from “the Magician” in the years to come.
