Tim Ferry is the Red Dog, a racer's racer and hard charger who will never throw in the towel. When you get right down to it, the simple fact is that he's one of the hardest-working men in race business. Tim hails from West Palm Beach, Florida, where he was born on March 18, 1975, but now calls Dade City home. He started racing at age seven in 1982 when his dad, who was also a racer, bought him a bike. Tim spent his amateur career competing in almost every moto series and single race you can name throughout the 1980s and early '90s. He turned pro in 1992, but didn't come to prominence until he nabbed the 125 East Coast Championships a half decade later in 1997.
After being let go by Suzuki in 1997, Tim stepped up from a 125 to a 250 and found other support with Noleen Yamaha, then the Mazda Chaparral Yamaha Team. He did quite well during that era and got on factory Yamaha at the end of 1999, which was a milestone in his career. Ever since he switched to the four-stroke YZ426 in 2001, he's gone on to many more top finishes. In fact, Tim won his first AMA Chevy Trucks 250 Motocross event at Glen Helen riding the four-stroke. After a string of knee and wrist injuries in '04 and '05 that left him on the sidelines, Yamaha let him go from the program. That left him looking for a ride for the '06 season, which he found with the privateer Team MotoXXX. The 2006 season was pretty consistent for Tim and he enjoyed some solid top five results throughout the year. As the 2007 season approaches, Tim has made it back to the upper echelon of the sport with a ride under factory Kawasaki tent! Ups or downs--it doesn't matter--Ferry bounces back and is ready to run up front...watch out!
One may often find Tim spending the off-season in California riding and testing every day. Since it's a lot easier for him to be at home, however, Tim has built a Supercross track and a motocross track at his house, where he can ride straight out of his garage and get down to business with no traveling to bog him down. When not racing, Tim enjoys mountain biking, weightlifting, surfing, a round or two of golf and--most of all--relaxing with his wife and kid.
As is usually the case in such a dangerous sport as motocross, Tim has collected his share of flinch-inducing injuries over the years, including three knee surgeries, two broken thumbs, a broken wrist, a broken jaw (in three places), plus three teeth knocked out. In fact, Tim missed most of the 2004 season due to injuries. Never one to back down, though, Tim's main goal right now is just to win a championship, starting with Supercross. He's in the hunt and riding better every year. With Tim Ferry approaching, it's safe to say that outdoor moto-x racing will never be the same.
