Welcome to the etnies UK team Mark Baines

Jan 11 2012 / Wednesday

Mark Baines

Mark Baines needs no introduction; a stalwart of the UK & European skate scene and true professional, he’s killing it now harder than ever, with a seemingly endless slew of recent coverage and video parts. We’re proud to welcome Mark to the etnies family with yet another a brand new edit to kick-start the new year and ring in the changes.

How hard was it to film the section in this bitter winter?
With the part the only difficult thing was the weather and getting dry days. I don't mind the cold too much but the wind is the worst and we've had a lot of that lately. Once we got going and logging footage it wasn't too bad pulling it all together.

Is the collation of a video part or edit still a process you look forward too? And now with the emphasis on the web as opposed to print do you think that this is playing into 'your hands' to a certain extent?
I guess so yes! I love filming video parts, I always have. It's like you get the first few clips and can already see what you want to do. I do think it's a shame that video, although widely viewed via the internet, has become almost throw away and unappreciated, but you have to move with the times and I am as happy working on little projects like this one as I am putting together full parts… It’s what I have always enjoyed doing.

There have been some major changes to your support structure recently... Were these easy decisions to make and how do you see your new paths evolving over the next year?
Yeah it's been a pretty crazy few months. It really made me look at my overall situation. I was on the full DVS team, but I felt like I was lost in the mix. Before that it felt like we had relevance even though we were on the Euro thing they had set up, but at least we knew our place kind of thing? Basically with leaving DVS and Blueprint focused and based in America I felt like it wasn't right for me and where I’m at currently. The decision to leave Blueprint was so tough because these are some of my oldest friends, but I had to do what was right for me. Being part of Fabric Skateboards, which is focused on the UK and Europe made sense. The one thing that always made Blueprint stand out was that it wasn't just another American company and I guess I still think of it in that way. This year I’m just carrying on skating as I always have, nothing changes. My problem is that I always said you should always aim to put out better parts than your previous one and once you’re way off the mark then its time to have a rethink, I am still trying to put out better parts and I have that same drive so I just want to bring all that to etnies. Give me a project and I’m happy.

Why etnies?
If I’m honest I was wondering what I should do with regard to shoes. It's so tough when you are with a brand for over a decade, you don't really see yourself on anyone else. I spoke with Percy (UK etnies TM) about etnies, and after looking at the team and shoes I made the decision. It’s going to be a good thing, etnies has always been the solid brand, supporting skateboarding and I’m pleased I now get a chance to be a part of that.

How do you see this year panning out? Have you any aims/plans/projects?
There’s a couple trips I’m going on this year. I spoke with Haslam yesterday about a Cyprus trip which would be fun. Then we are doing etnies trips and a couple of Fabric trips and there's always stuff going on with WeSC. I am working on another little clip for Fabric right now, which needs to be done by the end of the month really to coincide with my board coming out. It's 80mph winds atm though so it's a little out of my hands. I am also doing the skate camp in the summer with WeSC and now etnies are backing it too. That’s going to be really good fun. Just trying to be as productive as possible really, I enjoy producing video and shooting photos so that’s always been a main focus for me and will continue to be.
