A Tale of Two Cities III - Part 1

What happens when you combine the youngest and oldest riders on the team? What if one of them is a “vert dog” and the other a “contest skater?” When we paired up Juergen Horrwarth and Axel Cruysberghs for the third part of the Tales of Two Cities series, some people questioned the cleverness of this combination, but it turned out to be the best one yet. Both Axel and Juergen are all-terrain skateboarders and were hungry to attack the spots that their region had to offer.

Part 1, Germany:
The search for the home of the Pretzel

First, we hit southern Germany to get a taste of what it’s like to be Juergen Horrwarth. His hometown, Metzingen, doesn’t have a lot of skateable terrain, but we managed to get a few tricks at the skatepark and some hidden spots. We also took the time to climb up to the Castle “Hohen Neuffen” and enjoy the view of the area. In between eating Spätzle, Lentils and Schnitzel (not to mention the local beer) Axel and Juergen got busy on the spots in Swabia. The concrete park in Stuttgart was the starting point and last spot on most days. We hit up epic spots like the recently discovered, cleaned up ditch. Our friendly guide, Andi Welther, not only showed us around, but he also skated as hard as Axel and Juergen.

Because a lot of our time was wasted on skateboarding, we never quite found the exact spot where the Pretzel was invented. According to legend, a baker from the Metzingen region came up with the idea of the weirdly shaped bread back in medieval times. Must be a big deal, considering Juergen has a tattoo of his family crest that includes a Pretzel!
