etnies was shocked and disappointed to discover that the City of Lake Forest banned BMX pegs from their public skatepark. In fact, we heard nothing of this proposed ban until AFTER it happened and it should be noted that the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest, although it bears our name, is managed and run by the City of Lake Forest, not by etnies or any etnies personnel.
We are opposed to the BMX peg ban at the skatepark and below is a comment-based petition to sign and speak out against it. Thank you for your continued support of BMX and etnies.
(Note: Since we will be showing the city of Lake Forest the petition, your information will be shared with them in an effort to overturn the ban.)

the problem is that the parks developer gives the city a warranty for the park that they say is voidable if bikes/pegs are allowed in the park

"Don't start burning shoes over this people"? This problem isn't etnies saying don't let bikes use pegs like DC said don't allow bikes. This is the city. How hard is it to find a park developer that will build a park that is warrantied for bikes and pegs. They are out there, Planet Concrete for one... Etnies should have made a "DC" like contract that says Etnies will give the city the money for the park, BUT bikes WILL be allowed in the park forever in every way. A contract is a contract.

The Lake Forest beaurocrats would be hard pressed to prove metal pegs caused more wear and tear than Grade 8 steel axles and kingpins that stick out from skateboard trucks and the aluminum trucks themselves.
Nonetheless, this is idiocy at its finest. This is a monitored park, so they can make bike riders use plastic pegs only. With plastic pegs, bike riders will cause much LESS wear and tear than skateboards. Ironic, huh?

Nobody's going to burn Etnies, Jason. You show your ignorance with that statement. Anybody who knows anything about the Lake Forest Skatepark knows Etnies fought very hard to get bikes allowed into it. In addition, any warranty on the skatepark would be voided already since bikes have been allowed in it for years.

skatepark cement is slick, and does not chip or grind down nearly as easily as the street construction grade stuff. also most parts of a park that are possible to grind have coping to protect the ledge and give nice smooth slides. let pegs in!

Keep the pegs. Use wider, peg-friendly coping in the new section if needed. And increased crowding shows there is a demand. Add more BMX sessions to accomodate all the kids who are getting into it!

Grinding is grinding. Damage will be done weather it's trucks or pegs. There are also alternatives such as plastic pegs that can be used as well.

I live in Corpus Christi,Tx where we have a skatepark that does not allow bikes for the same STUPID reason. Etnies donated this park for BOTH skateboarding AND BMX. They didn't have to do that. Quit discriminating and let these guys shred!!!!!!! It's a skatepark, stuff is gonna get messed up. Who cares!? Would you rather have your street spots messed up? We have a bmx only cement park in arizona and pegs are allowed. The park has no more damage then any of the other parks that bikes are allowed in. There is no reason to ban pegs in the Etnies park. thanks,

I'm sure if Etnies had known that pegs would have been banned from the skatepark they would not have provided the funds for the initial construction of the skatepark. This is a case of the council misunderstanding how damage at park occurs. If they had done some research into the subject their vote would surely have been different.

This ban does not directly affect me,but I must say that it's nothing short of asinine to interdict pegs when there is not a single person who can legitimately support the theory that pegs inflict any more damage than skateboards. Until someone can prove otherwise, the ban should be abnegated.

Banning pegs is just another form of tearing apart a unified community of extreme sports athletes. It's prejudice and ridiculous. We all have the same desire to have pure natural fun in a safe controlled environment. I still support Etnies because of everything they have contributed to the sports they are involved with, but I could not disagree more with the banning of a component on a tool used for having good times with good people.

I've used the Etnies skatepark multiple times since moving to Orange, and I have your city to thank for that. The Etnies skatepark has provided a great, fun, and safe environment for bikers and skaters to meet others and stay out of trouble for over 7 years. I'm sure multiple friendships have been formed at your skatepark and countless young peoples' lives have been touched by action sports.

This is the reason why I'm completing this petition. In response to the recent ban of pegs on BMX bikes at Etnies skatepark, I implore Lake Forest to reconsider its goal in doing this. I assume the goal of having a government-sponsored skatepark is to have people use the facility instead of participating in gangs, vandalism, or violence.

By banning pegs from the skatepark, the City is inhibiting a lot of participants in the park. The ban could even promote that bikers use non-sanctioned areas in the city (such as handrails and ledges at local businesses) to practice their grinds. You will ultimately see a better investment for Lake Forest if you allow BMX bikers to use pegs in the skatepark.

I ride pegs on my BMX bike, and when I go to a skatepark, I use them. If there is a skatepark that doesn't allow pegs, I won't go there. There is an indoor skatepark close to my house and I refused to give them my business all winter long, as well as my friends. Our reason for this is because they do not allow pegs.

I think the city should be smart about banning something first of all. They should look into it a lot more before finalizing a ban. A skate park will obviously have wear and tear if its being used, Just like anything in this world. But skateboards can easily compete with doing the same amount of damage as a peg can.Don't be stupid, Unban peg use at the skatepark, its a part of the sport. Everyone knows that skateboards and bikes do equal damage to the parks. All this ban is doing is discouraging kids from wanting to ride their bikes in a safe, properly-built environment. Leading them to ride in the streets, with cars and the risk of being trespassed for riding somewhere they're not allowed to. Or, they may not ride at all and get into other mischievous activities because riding just isn't as fun to them with ridiculous rules and the inability to GRIND.

I think it's important to remember that if lawful facilities like skatepark's exclude individuals who enjoy riding with pegs then these individuals will be forced elsewhere. Typically this means private and public property; facilities which can be damaged from use. Local government's should consider this as the consequences of unlawful damage can be extremely severe for youths which would otherwise be considered upstanding citizens.

First off, it is underhanded to impose a regulation without the knowledge, let alone permission, of the namesake.
That having been said, if the namesake is opposed to the ban, that's good enough for me. In addition, there is a definite (and severe) limitation on what the BMX riders can do with the ban in place.
If the issue is damage to the various edges at the park, then it would be just as "justified" to ban grinding by the skaters. Of course, that won't happen.

Bmxers should be able to ride etnies with pegs. If we can't then I don't think that it's fair that skaters can have medal trucks and r able to grind. It's the same. I also think that it's not fair that bikers only get 6 hours (99% of us can't go on Monday mornings because of school) I think we should have more time to ride.Thank you for your time. I am still riding the same free pegs given to me in 2003 by Etnies when the park opened. They are specifically designed NOT to damage skatepark property. Without pegs, I won't be able to ride anything in the street course. I won't be able to slide the combi bowl with my ally-oop fakie 50-50s. 3/4 of etnies has been taken away from me. Please consider allowing Etnies BMXers to purchase these pegs again from the store on site. Please, don't take your pegs away from me.

The minor damage that pegs cause are just some of the regular wear and tear a skatepark of any quality takes. Skateboards do their fare share of damage as well and even though all participating sports cause small amounts of damage, it is never anything too serious.

A peg causes no more damage than a skateboard. pegs are wimpy pieces of aluminum while skateboard trucks have a grade-8 hardened chromoly kingpin sticking out the center of them. As a lake forest resident and a rider of the park, it is ridiculous for the city to ban pegs in the park. Having ridden the park countless times since its opening, i have yet to see any biker do any peg induced damage to any park of the park.
With metal coping covering almost every grindable surface, I see no valid reason to ban pegs in the park. Banning pegs is further alienating the bmx community (given the already limited access to the park)

I'm from Sweden, and can't ride the park. Still I think it's ridicoulus to ban pegs... Why not ban skateboard trucks? The ledges and copings will be messed anyways. An skatepark ain't something cheap, it has to be maintained like a football ground. And yeah, as someone mentioned, what about plastic pegs. It's almost the same thing as metal soccer shoe studs, why not forbid those aswell? The grass would probably be cheaper to maintain with plastic studs och flat soles. Just saying.

We've got a peg-ban at our local park here in Bergen (Norway) and it literally serves no purpose.
The park gets just as worn and the employees have to work harder just to enforce the ban and it treats bikers as being 'second class'!
Whats worse is that such a ban fuels the animosity between bikers, skaters and all the other people who use, and work in, these parks

A skatepark is one place where kids, teens, adults should feel free to ride their bikes (pegs or not) without fear of getting in trouble with the law. We have no problem funding basketball and tennis courts around the country for kids to play in. We don't kick out kids who play roller hockey on these courts. So why would we do it to bikers with pegs at a skatepark.

They are not looking into this issue. I will say there is some sort of biased opinion in this effort to ban pegs. Why not allow plastic pegs? Why not build the park to current specs for multi-use? Adding steel plating behind coping and on ledges. This is a shared park, not a skateboard only park.

We ride a local cement park every weekend (Ceres, CA) and have been for the last four years. We run pegs, and the park handles it very well because the contractor built the park correctly. At other parks I've seen much more damage from skate-axles popping little divots in the concrete than any substanitial damage caused by pegs. Please do your homework, use better cement, and illicit input from reputable contractors who know how to build a park that lasts.

Parks are the places the cops consistantly tell you to go when they try to bust you for riding street, but not only are there limited parks that allow bikes, but now they're trying to take pegs out of the picture. I don't think its fair and well thought out that pegs are banned from the skatepark because Skateboard trucks to just as much damage to the cement, it;s just a stereotypic thing about the BMX pegs, and they just need something to blame. Having been involved in freestyle BMX since the mid 1980's, I can attest to how minimal the impact of pegs is on a skatepark. I am 31 yrs old and have ridden bmx my whole life. Pegs are a way of life for a freestyle bmxer. It can and probably will change the dynamics of the sport if other cities follow suit and ban us from riding what and how we want. Pegs are harmless and fun. This ban will not result in anything other than discouraging kids to come to the park and enjoy it. Skateboard trucks are made of metal and cause as much or more damage. Any concrete will need upkeep and maintenance over time. Please educate yourselves and realize that banning pegs is a bad decision.

Although I'm not from the United States, I'd just like to show my support for turning over the ban on BMX pegs on BMX bikes at the Etnies Skatepark. In Singapore, our skatepark which is run by our National Parks Board, allows bikes and skateboards during all times, and allows the use of pegs on BMX bikes. I really don't see the issue of banning pegs on BMX bikes unless the Etnies skatepark is made of flimsy material, which I'm sure it is not.

I don't understand why you would ban BMX pegs. Scooters and trucks on skateboards can do just as much-if not more-damage to the park; just because you can't take these parts off of a board or scooter doesn't mean you can compensate by limiting the progression of BMX kids. If your park has coping on ramps, ledges, and boxes, then bikers should be able to use them just like anybody else.

I am a the owner of a skatepark construction company (RampScape, LLC) and a BMX Biker. It is True that Pegs do more damage to skateparks that other Wheeled athletes but it is better that it is done at the skatepark than the rest of your city. A maintenance Fund should be set up for the park and events held at the park can benefit such fund.
90% of my riding involves my pegs, as does a lot of bikers.

Although, I do have some points to raise; we have many parks here in the UK that oppose pegs being run on the copings/ledges, but please tell me how a peg is any worse than that of the trucks of a skateboard? A skate park is meant for all sorts of action sport types, not just skateboards. BMX is a fast growing sport around the country and should be aloud to use a few small pegs that do just as much damage or less damage as a skateboard does.

In order to solve this issue, we would advise the city of Lake Forest to consider recommending the use of plastic pegs offered by many BMX brands now. Instead of banning all pegs, the skatepark should accept plastic pegs that are kinder to cement and copings. Not only are there so few parks in So-Cal that actually allow bikes, many BMX riders prefer to use pegs. Now if I remember correctly there are metal copings, not concrete, at the parpark. So I really don't see any reason for a peg ban.

you should be allowed to use pegs at the skatepark! if you cant then that skatepark blows and pegs are used in most bmx tricks.(if bike riders cant use pegs then skaters shouldnt be allowed to use wheels).

Banning pegs from this "skate" park is going to encourage the wrong idea that skateboarders have more right to be riding the parks than bmxers and so create the feeling that bmxers are not wanted in "skate" parks. All this will do is encourage animosity between different types of park users. I personally would like to see the evidence behind the decision as I would imagine trucks do equal amount of wear to the park. This stinks of victimisation of bmxers.

If the park was built the right way, there's no reason to ban pegs. If the park starts falling apart you should contact the park builders to do the job right. There's parks all over the world that have been around way longer than the Etnies Park and never banned pegs (or bikes)

About 85% of people that ride BMX ride with pegs. It is not easy to change your riding habits when you've been riding a certain way for so long. It's also not easy to take your pegs off and put them back on everytime you want to ride a park.

The Lake Forest beaurocrats would be hard pressed to prove metal pegs caused more wear and tear than Grade 8 steel axles and kingpins that stick out from skateboard trucks and the aluminum trucks themselves.
Nonetheless, this is idiocy at its finest. This is a monitored park, so they can make bike riders use plastic pegs only. With plastic pegs, bike riders will cause much LESS wear and tear than skateboards. Ironic, huh?

Taking away pegs in the BMX world, limits riders severely. Some rider do ride pegless by choice, but most riders use pegs for tricks. So by taking away our pegs, you are taking away from our sport. It would be like taking off the lip of a skateboard. Skaters could still do tricks but by taking off the lip of the board, they will be severely limited. If you are worried about damage, all you have to do is get a small strip of metal and put it behind the coping to prevent damage from grinding.

If every single concrete park in the U.K. allows bicycles and metal pegs into it's skateparks, why on earth would the City of Lake Forest feel it necessary to ban them?
I run pegs and was eagerly looking forward to riding the park next time I'm in the States, now, I'm not so keen..

Assuming that there has been the complaint of pedals and handlebars of bikes allegedly causing damage to the park also, don't forget to ban those bicycle parts too.

well-built/ well-designed concrete parks= minimal/no problems, including BMX bikes (with or without pegs).There are countless examples of this all over the country, and the world. Please think this through from all angles before continuing a "ban" a bicycle part (?) at the Lake Forest park.

Please overturn the BMX peg ban. This ban is like saying that the bike itself is banned because they are one and the same. That's the whole point of the park in the first place. Please allow pegs in the park. I believe that a compromise could be reached in the form of a plastic pegs only agreement. Most riders would happily spend fifteen bucks to switch if that means they can use this park. Together with the coping, plastic pegs would ensure that the park will remain useable for the long-term. Pegs do not ruin skateparks, Shit head kids do with there vandalism and trash. Trucks on skateboard are made of a high strength material like pegs and can cause just as much damage. From an engineering perspective concrete is very fine and strong and can take a lot of abuse than your average ledge you see that has been hit from skaters and bikers. All of the concrete parks I have been to that allow pegs are still going strong and show little to no damage to the concrete.

I wish you would re-consider your decision to ban bicycle pegs at your skatepark. I only know what I have read, but it sounds as though your decision was not based on intelligient debate , but rather a one sided view aimed at eliminating bmx at the park. Please don't follow the close minded thinking that any one so called extreme sport takes presidence over another. Weigh all your options and debate them with the patrons of the park. I am extremely disappointed in the decision to ban pegs from the Etnies skatepark. In hearing the news, I was surprised that Etnies would allow such a rule to be made knowing that their pro bmx team consists of some of the top riders in the world. After finding out that the City of Lake Forest made the call, I'm sure many messages similar to mine will be quickly heard.
I'll be glad to hear that the peg ban has lifted as will thousands of bmx riders who travel the country will be also.

The ban on pegs is such a cap on the experience of bike riding to many riders. The option to use pegs or not opens up new areas of the park, and tricks you can link together during your runs. Without pegs the parks enjoyability can suffer, and the park as a whole can become boring. It seems like such a waste of time and money to build something of such quality, and then ruin its ability to be enjoyable.

This peg ban is outrageous and unnecessary. If you are to ban pegs I suggest you also ban skateboard trucks (which is ridiculous). This ban will not prevent BMX riders from grinding, they will just grind on other parts of their bike. Also, as a rider who runs pegs, taking pegs off completely alters the feel of a bike, and the style of riding. I sincerely hope you can re-think your decision, I know many riders are bummed out about this no pegs decision. thanks

The older frames from the late 80's to around 2004 all had big, chunky dropouts that were there to protect the rear wheel while grinding. This created a sort of blunt blade that would stick out about an inch below the pegs and would slice away at any ledge.
With dropouts now being designed to be flush with the pegs, if not smaller than the pegs, the damage caused by grinding has been significantly reduced.
The use of plastic sleeved pegs will also reduce damage.

Ive never even heard of the City Of Lake Forest, (Im from Australia) but us Aussie riders are behind ya.
As said below, take away the legal grinding spots (parks) and kids will go back to grinding and damaging other property.
Pegs are a good sized part of bmx, just like trucks are for skating. Ask AND LISTEN the community bout things like this before you put the bans in place Lake Forest council.

bmx pegs and skateboard trucks/axles are the same thing. On a skateboard or bike, somebody takes a fall and throws their board or bike and it's gonna damage the cement irregardless. You're discriminating plain and simple, there's no evidence the same material as a peg damages a piece of coping more than that same material as a skateboard truck, damage occurs and you fix it, you don't create a ban to discourage use of the park. You are discriminating against KIDS in your own community.

This is stupid. Trucks from skateboards do just as much damage, if not more, to the concrete than bikes do. I BMX and I'm cool with skaters and stuff, but they seem to damage things a little bit more than pegs do.

Pegs cause MORE damage than trucks because the metal ends directly hit the ground and chip the concrete. I literally skate the park everyday and I see the damage happen over time. While trucks don't have metal ends that slam into the concrete and chip it. You can see the chipping for yourself if you look at the skatepark in person instead of just sitting here commenting while you've never even been there. So please understand that bikes ACTUALLY DO DESTROY the skatepark.

I have been rolling around etnies since day one in 03. After the bikes came pedaling in i saw damage build up over time. The concrete on the deck has chip damage four to three inches from the coping. A peg is about that length? You can roll over the hole but sometimes you will crash and burn. When you drop a skateboard down 13 feet it will chip up the deck but if a bike falls. What do you think what would happens. The medal will chip. Not the cement on the ground.

All the parks around here allow pegs, they are still in perfect condition, and riders and skateboarders get along great. Pegs don't damage the park, or cause injury if that's what you are worried about. They are part of our sport, parks are supposed to be a safe place where there are no stupid rules. You are forcing us to ride the streets and get ticketed.

I dont think that it is fair for the city of Lake Forest to ban the use of pegs because using pegs is part of the sport. The pegs are used for about 50% of the tricks in the sport, and by bannig the pegs is like limiting what the riders can learn and practice.

Trucks are aluminum and lighter and do not pose the same threat. Banning BMX was the city's easy way to shut the complainers up. Once you complain, privileges are completely revoked. Just wrong.
