After congesting Downtown Austin and making kings of the city's friendly taxi drivers, faithful SXSWers partook in a mass exodus, returning the late night streets to the bridge bats and other locals. Here, in typical retrospective wrap up style, are my favorite moments from the trip:
HOTTUB at Dallas/Fort Worth
HOTTUB at last year's SXSW
No, they didn't play a show at the Dallas/Fort Worth airport, but after my last-minute flight booking landed me in Dallas/Forth Worth (by way of Seattle, by way of Santa Ana) the ladies of HOTTUB made the last leg of my long travel day, the best. I was able to hitch a ride in their van for the 3+ hour drive into Austin and enjoyed every minute of it, including my first visit to a Cracker Barrel. These. Girls. Are. Rad. Just listen to this, and imagine a 4-5hr roadtrip's worth of it... live.

Waynestock at The Liberty
Our party with Rawkblog & TwentyFourBit brought us to The Liberty. It's way on the eastside of Austin so the trek seemed to take forever, but it was well worth it. After spending the afternoon in what felt like a local TX backyard party - complete with free PBR - the feel-good mellow vibe only lasted as long as the walk back into the chaos of Downtown. We headed back to E 6th for dinner at the Buenos Aires Cafe, a nice Argentine restaurant with good food that wasn't extreme or death metal or gimmicky in any way.
OFF! & Black Lips at Club DeVille
The set by OFF! at VICE's Club DeVille Party included Keith Morris's song segues wherein he admittedly waxed poetic about old friends, some of whom were in the crowd and others of whom are long gone... There were a few really great moments to witness.
OFF! was a hard act to follow but Black Lips did it and did it well, but I did notice a shift in mosh pit.
The Growlers at Design Within Reach
The Growlers are SoCal locals who bring the party with them. Whether it's with inflatable palm trees or a foil-covered setup, these kids make a spectacle of their sets but the songs somehow manage to take center stage.

Obits & Dum Dum Girls at Red7
Obits are legendary.
Dum Dum Girls are smart, smart women... who rock, so hard... with legs for days.
Superhumanoids and Lord Huron at Headhunters
Headhunters is a dirty dive but Superhumanoids turned it into a beautiful place to be. More than a wall of sound, theirs is like the prettiest accent wall... of sound.
Outside in the daylight, Lord Huron brought the patio bar to life with everything from hand clapping to washboard rythms. When you watch a band play with such abandon, dancing is inevitable.
Thee Oh Sees and Odd Future at The Starr Bar
Our party with VICE falls into the "save the best for last" category. The VICE Kills Texas SXSW Closing Party started at midnight and ended at epic... so much so that this blogger couldn't even capture it on film slash memory card. I liken it to a vampire that you're quick enough to catch on camera, only to find that when you develop the prints there's no trace of him. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
