While growing up, when did it hit you that you wanted to be a fashion designer?
*It's funny, as a kid I wanted to be a veterinarian- but I always made clothes for dolls and whatnot and liked to draw. It wasn’t until high school during my first art class that I realized I wanted to be a fashion designer! I do remember that my first favorite outfit was when I was about 12 - an orange and white striped vest and orange flats!- hmmmmm maybe foreshadowing of my current hair color obsession!
What was one of the first things you designed/made?
*the first thing I ever made was in junior high- I made wrap skirt cover-ups for the beach- one for myself and one for my best friend. I used old 70s flower print pillowcases my mom had lying around. I think my mom knew that I used her pillowcases- but I cant be sure- sorry mom! J
Describe your experience on Project Runway in 3 words.
*inspiring, exciting, and exhausting!
If given the chance, would you compete in the crazy world of Project Runway again?
*interesting question. If I had never participated- I would- I definitely recommend the experience for any designer, it really can enable growth as a designer and was such an incredible life experience. I don’t think I would do an allstar episode or anything like that- once is enough! Although it was super fun- it was pretty intense!
What was your attraction to design for the younger target market of etnies?
*I wore etnies in highschool and am thrilled to be wearing them again! I was attracted to the younger market because after project runway so many young girls reached out to me via the web and on the streets. I am so inspired by their charisma and desire to pursue fashion, art, and active sports.
What are you and etnies doing to promote this special collaboration line?
*we are doing so many things! Mostly chatting with lots of editors and bloggers west coast and east coast- and all over. I was in New York with etnies talking about the collaboration for Spring. we are also gonna do lots of fun videos that can be seen at etnies.com- be sure to check em out!
Inspiration for the collection?
*the inspiration for the collection came from what inspires me as a designer in my personal work- mixed prints and textures and metallics. I also heart plaid so much, so I designed a buffalo plaid for the collection that is used on the footwear, a short, hoodie, and also a super cute tote bag which I love!
Can we ever catch you on your days off skateboarding around Cali? :)
*ha ha ha. No not skateboarding—but I do snowboard- falling on snow works better for me J.
What are three articles or clothing/accessories that you cannot live without?
*hanes boys white tank tops, black jeans, red lipstick
Any advice for any aspiring fashion designers?
*stay inspired! Go to lots of museums, read about other designers, practice drawing, take a sewing class, and have fun making creations or changing up clothes you already have- that’s my fave!
