Brett Simpson (Huntington Beach, CA), 25, finished equal 13th at the ASP PRIME Reef Hawaiian Pro, marking the best performance for Mainland America to kickoff his Triple Crown campaign in strong form.
The hard working Californian is currently competing on his rookie year on the ASP Dream Tour and has been a standout in several ASP PRIME events, setting him in excellent position for requalification for the 2011 ASP World Tour.
Simpson, a former standout at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, returned to form this year by charging past current ASP World Tour No. 9 Michel Bourez (PYF), 24, ASP World Tour veterans Damien Hobgood (Satellite Beach, FL), 31, and Travis Logie (ZAF), 31, as well as reigning ASP World Junior Champion Maxime Huscenot (REU), 18, on the way to his Quarterfinals finish.
"I'm happy to start off the Triple Crown this way," Simpson said. "I don't feel like I've had a great heat yet. It's been really tough conditions with really in between sized swells. We committed to out the back and then got wide ones and missed it. I guess that's why you put your two cents in and stick to your guns, but I love Hawaii, it means a lot to do well."
The talented regular-footer has proven he can compete in all conditions with several impressive showings in Hawaii and is always hungry to compete in Haleiwa's challenging elements.
"This is probably one of the most fun waves on Tour," Simpson said. "It definitely gets big and hairy, but when it's this size it's definitely high-performance. You can do big carves and it's epic."
Simpson, current No. 16 on the ASP World Ranking, has been one competitor on the ASP World Tour who has climbed the ASP World Rankings by combining impressive performances on the ASP PRIME Series, including a win at this year's U.S. Open of Surfing, with his ASP Dream Tour results, including a Semifinals finish at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal.
"I always just want to go in to it having fun and not try and stress too much on it," Simpson said. "That's when I get my best results."
Simpson will take to the water again at the second jewel of the Triple Crown, the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing, which holds a waiting period from November 24 through December 6, 2010.
