Over the last 4 years Jonno Durrant & Stefan Hunt have roamed the North American continent with no clear goal other than to surf some swell, experience foreign culture and most importantly lend a helping hand.
In 2006 the two Aussie mates embarked on a journey to all 50 states with the ridiculous goal of surfing in all of them. What started as a stupid idea to borrow an ice cream truck and roam the USA for 7 months quickly became an adventure that the surfing world laughed with and encouraged. The boys directed, produced and edited the 1 hour documentary Surfing 50 States completely independent that generated an unexpected cult following. Screened in over 20 film festivals around the world, winning awards and airing on Fuel TV the boys looked to taking on a similar challenge in another country.
Their spontaneous attitude towards life found them 6 months later working in an orphanage in Southern Mexico helping to care for over 50 children from backgrounds of abuse and abandonment. Realising the impact that surfing had provided the kids inspired Jonno & Stefan to collaborate with Mission Mexico Children’s Refuge and create their 2nd feature documentary. After 3 months at the orphanage and 6 months in the edit room the boys released their 2nd feature documentary, Somewhere Near Tapachula.
This month Jonno & Stefan have embarked on their most challenging journey yet. - a 3 month voyage across the 28 diverse and extremely populated states of India. The beautiful art form of wave riding will be used once again to spread the stoke throughout communities, stretching the definition of surfing to suit whatever landscape the boys encounter. Capturing the vibrant colours of the countryside and experiencing the humbling culture within the slums are just a few of the elements that will make this adventure one not to forget. Whilst surfing will be used to get the grommets psyched, Jonno & Stefan have also chosen several non profit organisations to meet up with along the way, from orphanages in the Himalayas to wildlife reserves in the north east jungle just to mention a few. The inspiration behind this is a result of their time spent at Mision Mexico, realising the need to lend a helping hand to those in less fortunate, and how rewarding it can be.
Surfing 28 States: India is a collaboration of Surfing 50 States meets Somewhere Near Tapachula. The weird and wacky surfing and culture of the diverse communities along with highlighting the efforts of individuals leading the non profit world and the impact it is having on communities. This trip is more about giving than taking. Whether its the stoke of riding a surfboard for the first time, or providing a community with a simple filtration device that will provide them access to clean drinking water, a luxury that we take for granted.
Join the Surfing 28 States crew as they embark on a journey, riding the wave of love, life & hope.
