tyler flanagan mammoth 2nd place grand prix

Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California (January 11, 2010) – Tyler Flanagan continues to make the world take notice of his slopestyle skills with this weekend’s second place finish at the Sprint US Grand Prix of Snowboarding at Mammoth Mountain, CA. Flanagan’s no stranger to being one of the youngest riders in the pack; he started competing in USASA Nationals at only seven years-old. Now at 16, he’s finding his slopestyle stride following up a Dew Tour win, with this weekend’s second place finish at his home mountain.

“This weekend the level of riding was intense,” says Flanagan. “It felt good to take some of that energy and funnel it into my run. I know Mammoth’s park inside and out and got to sleep in my own bed last night, so I felt good coming out here for a Grand Prix.”

Flanagan took second place with his winning score of 46.70 out of 50, just behind Chas Guldemond, 22 years old. His high scoring combo started off with a backside 1080, frontside 900 and a half cab onto the first rail with a backside 360 out. On the second section he 50/50’d the second rail, then a backside 540 and a cab 1080 off the last jump. While Flanagan didn’t try for a double cork 1080 during his run, he did land it for the first time in practice this weekend. So keep an eye out for that trick in his upcoming contest runs.

Following this weekend’s contest, Flanagan will be stopping by the Zumiez 100k in Keystone, Colorado, then on to the second stop of the Dew Tour to defend his current first place standing. He’ll finish what’s been a busy month already by going for slopestyle gold for the first time at Winter X Games Fourteen, January 28-31 in Aspen, CO.

With his early season win at the opening Winter Dew Tour event, the Totino’s Open, Flanagan moves on next to the Dew Tour Wendy’s Invitational stop in Snowbasin, UT, January 14-17, 2010. He is now carrying 100 points toward an overall Dew Tour win. Similar to the Dew Tour’s summer competition structure, the Winter Dew Tour is based on a cumulative points system as the top snow athletes battle it out for a piece of the $1.5 million prize purse and the chance to take home the Dew Cup at the conclusion of the season in February.

In between slopestyle contests and rail jams, the Southerner turned Mammoth-local will be filming with Mammoth Mountain’s Play Big Productions for yet another highly anticipated snowboarding film premiering Fall 2010.
