Transparentsea Voyage
Chris Del Moro is preparing to join Australia's Humpback whales on their migration through the Southern Whale Sanctuary. Here's the first of his Transparentsea Voyage blogs:
Just finished up packing, trying to get some last minute emails and such done before I jump on the plane heading towards the land of Oz. The reason for this journey is to hook up with great surfer, environmentalist and good friend Dave Rastovich to embark on a 700km journey from Byron Bay to Sydney Australia (think SF to LA). Our goal is to travel along side the annual migration of Humpback whales on their mission towards Antarctica. Through our journey we are hoping to spread awareness of the annual whale hunts happening in the Southern Whale Sanctuary as well as the 23,000 dolphins killed annually in Taiji, Japan. Dave, lensman Hilton Dawe and a rotating boat will travel in 16ft Hobie kayak/outrigger/sail boats hoping to tap into the raw powers that the ocean will bring our way.
I won't lie; I am feeling nervous and excited. The task ahead will be testing but the rewards could leave us all with the trip of a life-time. I'm feeling apprehensive of some of the large fishy's that will surely accompany us, but am trying to embrace the experience of possibly seeing the largest shark of my life. Sleeping in the sand, escaping the concrete jungle and being in the close proximity of some of nature's finest creators has been glowing with excitement, keep an eye out for further journals once the trip begins in 3 days, Oct. 1st.
