Part 1 of 2
Stress If you didn’t have that, you won’t appreciate whenever you’re fine.
What is your full name?
Sergio Layos Sanchez.
When’s your birthday?
The 17th of July. I was born in the ’85.
Cool. Where’s your hometown?
How much time do you spend there and how much to you travel?
It depends. Sometimes I can be home for three months, sometimes in six month’s time I’ll only be there for a week. I’ll be going through there all the time but I won’t spend much time there. I would say like, maybe five months out of the year.
That’s not much. Got any girlfriends? Are you married or anything?
Not at the moment. It’s really hard when you travel all the time. You miss the person. It’s too much for now.
Do you have any habits or rituals you do before you ride?
Not really. I know I should stretch. My doctor always tells me to, but I always forget or get lazy or wanna ride right away, so it’s not happening.
How often do you get to ride? I know you’re traveling a lot, but when you’re home I’m sure you take days off…
I take one day off every week or something. I try to ride everyday but I also try to get away for a day or two, if not you’ll get burnt out, for sure.
Ever get burnt out on BMX?
Yeah, you ride everyday, but some of those days it’s just for like, 15 minutes. So it’s not like, really riding. It depends how you feel, but at least you get on your bike and cruise around. But if you do anything everyday you have to be careful because you might get burnt out.
What do you think you’d be doing if you’d never started riding BMX?
Nothing good. I wasn’t that good at studying. I was good but all my friends were always doing something else. I wasn’t focusing on that at all. I’d have a shitty job, just to go through life. I’m sure I wouldn’t be as happy as I am now.
What do you like riding most? Park, dirt, street, vert? You ride a bit of everything.
I would say riding trails is my favorite thing. A park is somewhere you can go and you know it’s gonna be good. That’s where I ride the most. But I like trails the most because the feeling you get just riding is so good… makes it all free. In a skatepark you have to do tricks.
I like everything. Street isn’t something I ride a lot because you have to find a spot and make sure you like it. And then try something… it’s just too much work when you don’t have that much time. Where I live there’s not that much to ride so I have to go downtown… but I like it.
You have any inspirations in your life that keeps you motivated and riding? Any friends you look up to, or people?
Like riders… Chase Hawk. Mike Aiken too. People who’ve been riding a lot and are so good it just makes you wanna ride. As far as life goes… I think Joe Rich would be one. The way he sees life, is really good. Kind of makes me think about what I wanna do.
How long you think you’ll be riding? What are your plans for the future?
I don’t know. I think I’ll try to ride my bike as long as I can. If I can be 50 and still riding my bike I would, for sure. But if that can’t happen… maybe try to find a job, do something with BMX. I know it’s not the best business ever, but it’s something I like and something that gives me happiness so I could do for a living I guess.
Why’d they tear down the skatepark in your town?
I guess for the people in that town, we’re not the best people to be with. So the city built a tennis court there. Those people give the city money, dress nice, you know?
It’s also because there were other people running the town before and the new ones were competing. So when the new ones came in they just wanted to take out what the others did. Like a fight. And we couldn’t say anything, which sucked because every three blocks there’s a tennis court. Kind of pointless. That skatepark was packed… there were more kids there than on the football field. But they don’t wanna see that. Whenever it’s summer time, at two in the afternoon, of course no one will be there skating or riding… its way too hot. But that’s what they see so they took it out. And you can’t fight with that. They got the power… you know?
You can’t go to city meetings and try to get them to build another park?
I’ve been doing that for the past 10 years and they just don’t realize what we are. We don’t dress nice and drive expensive cars so think we’re the worst. All we want is a place to practice a sport. It’s a shame but that’s just the way it is.
You got any good stories from traveling so much?
Every trip has something funny for sure. One time, I was with you, I kinda got robbed… they took my credit card and all my money. So I got some money from you guys and I went to Mexico and got robbed again. It was like two weeks without any money. Kinda made me realize you don’t need money to be happy and travel. As long as you have food and somewhere to stay. My trip wasn’t bad at all. I was happy, rode everyday, visited places. Kinda made me realize you don’t need much to be happy. If you do what you wanna do that’s all you need.
Recently your mom opened a restaurant and you and your brother helped. Can you tell us a little bit about that?
My mom was fixing clothes for a few stores. It wasn’t well paid at all and she was really burnt out. The people didn’t treat her well. I remember when I was a kid, waking up and seeing her working and I would go to bed and she was still there.
She was doing that for us. With that money she would buy parts for us, take us to all the contests. It was too rough for her. We didn’t have money at all. She was working everyday on that stuff. One day she was just too tired of it and we sat down. We spoke about it and decided the best thing was for her to quit that job and find something else. We talked about opening a coffee shop because it was something we thought was gonna work out. But finding places for that was way too expensive for what I had. I saved some money but it wasn’t enough.
One day we got a call from my mom’s friend. She said there was this place where a restaurant went out of business and the guy had like six months left. We just went in there and paid the regular rent with everything in it. It was pretty much ready to go. But the kitchen was old so we fixed it up. We made it nice and that’s basically how we started. For how the economy is right now it’s doing pretty good I guess.
You have a lot of customers in there?
During the week if it’s full. Lunchtime is the main thing for us. The food is homemade as if your mom were cooking it. People just come back everyday, have their same table everyday. It makes her happy because if it wasn’t good people won’t do that. It makes us proud.
What do you think you could do more of in your life, what do you need?
I would say I need more time. I’m always just getting back or need to go to sleep. I wish days were more than 24 hours long.
Recently you and your brother bought an Austin Mini car, tore it apart and are starting to restore it. What made you do that considering you haven’t got much time?
It’s a project like… I don’t have a deadline. If I have to be working on it for 10 years, I would. I’m not in a hurry at all. It was because me and my brother like finding projects to work on. It’s something I like to do with him. We were working on old motorcycles and we kept saying the next thing had to be an old car. So one day I sold my car and decided not to have a nice car. So I just got that one and another one to drive around. That’s how it started.
One day we decided to strip it down and work on it. Whenever I get time. It makes me think about something else. It’s a good thing to do. It has nothing to do with the rest of my life so it makes me think about other stuff. Pretty happy about it.
You like to shoot photos and film and stuff. What are you into shooting lately?
I’ve been shooting a lot of pictures. Filming… I haven’t been doing a lot of that because I just got the video camera two months ago and I haven’t had a chance, but I’m really happy about it. I get to learn something new. Learning how to use it, it’s something I like a lot. I think that’s why I like photography because you have to think about so many things before you take a picture. I’ve been taking a lot of pictures… more than I used to.
Obviously you ride bikes a lot. But is bike riding your favorite thing to shoot photos of?
I would say yes because I get so happy whenever I get a good shot. If you’re taking pictures of landscape, you kind of see what it is… but with riding you never know exactly how it’s gonna be so whenever you get a great shot it makes you really happy… like, “Oh look at this picture.”
You’ve been riding a while now. What do you think is the one trick that took you the longest to learn and what problems did you have with it?
I think 360 no-hander. I still can’t do them all the time. It just randomly happens. I don’t know why but it’s such a weird rotation, the way your bike has to be, it’s really hard for me to do it every time. I’m getting there but I’ve been trying it for years. Finally I got it a few times and now I’m more confident with it but it’s still really hard. I don’t know, someday I’ll be able to do it all the time.
You have any phobias, things you’re scared of or anything you don’t like?
Not really. I don’t like cockroaches but it’s not a phobia. They’re just really disgusting, but it’s not like I’m scared. I just won’t touch them.
What’s the worst advice that you’ve ever got?
It was from a person that wasn’t in my position. They told me not to worry about the future, live the moment…”You’ll be fine.” But they had a house already, pretty much all their future taken care of. So for me, like, having a restaurant and so many things going on, it wasn’t good advice.
What’s the worst thing you’ve ever spent your money on?
I would say a car I had. I traded it in. I didn’t have to pay much for it and it was fun to drive in but it wasn’t practical at all. It was something that I got excited about but realized it wasn’t really what I wanted. I ended up selling it within a year for a lot of money so it wasn’t that I lost a lot. But it didn’t make me feel happy. It wasn’t worth it for me. It was for someone else but not for me.
Besides that, have you made any other bad decisions in your life?
Yeah, I let a relationship pretty much suck. It wasn’t the other person’s fault, but sometimes you have something on your mind for so that you want it to happen. You let that kind of go on top of other things when you shouldn’t be doing it.
