Evil Lord Upsetter & Sly
The Evil Lord on the Upsetter and Sly were taken from Disney's Fantasia. Fantasia's "Night on Bald Mountain" is based on a legend from Slavic mythology about spirits of the dead who emerge from their graves at midnight to revel until dawn.
As night falls at the foot of Bald Mountain, on the Eve of Walpurgis Night, the monstrous, evil god Chernobog emerges from the jagged peak. Tormented, cursed spirits, witches and vampires rise from their graves to give obeisance. The evil specters dance feverishly as Chernobog revels in their slave-like worship. When morning approaches, church bells ring in the distance, causing Chernobog to cringe and recoil into his bat-like cloak. Light triumphs over darkness, the spirits return to their resting places and the sleepy medieval town awakes to a new day.
Walt asked Ukranian artist Vladimir Tytla, who was familiar with the stories from his childhood, to take the lead in animating this sequence. Tytla based the look and feel on the haunting and morbidly beautiful concept sketches created by children's book illustrator Kay Nielsen. To capture the menacing movements of the dark tyrant Chernobog, Walt asked Dracula star Bela Lugosi to model as the creature.
