Japan Invasion!

by: Travis | Thursday, February 28, 2008

Photos and words by etnies/ ThirtyTwo TM Eddie Lee.

The etnies team (Simon Chamberlain, Stian Solberg, Joe Sexton and Markku Koski) tour the land of the rising sun with an escort from the Transworld Japan editor and photographer to capture an 8 page exclusive. Their mission - To session a variety of street rails, take some deep powder turns, explore the Japanese trees and compete in the slope contest at Joetsu Kokusai resort.

Part 1 February, 2008

After 15 hours of traveling, the 32 team headed straight to Nagano - just another minor 5 hours of driving? First pit stop dinner. (Simon, Stian and Joe)

Enjoying the typical bento box.

Markku and Stian stoked to go shred!

Joe and Simmi getting ready to send’er.

Markku and Stian didn’t want to steal the show in the streets, so we decided to split the groups and let Simon and Joe slaughter the streets of Nagano. Here’s Marrku and Stian getting ready to venture in the Deep White of Akakura Kanko resort.

Jet lag didn’t have any play on our first day. Stian, Markku and TK getting hyped!

It pretty much didn’t let up and mother nature blessed us with her finest. Here was Stian’s first run. Not too bad, right?

Stian, before.

Here’s Stian after. Wheeee-hooooo!

Markku before - I swear he’s in there somewhere.

Markku after..... :)

Markku givin’er as well. As you can see from the array of powder being spit out, the snow was pretty light to say the least.

Take 32... Markku lays one out for the team.

Markku dropping some Pirrow-rines.

I think these two had one of the best days ever. Stian’s first taste of Japan’s finest.

And he’s off. Joe pretty much slaughtered this rail. Nose press.

Meanwhile Joe and Simon were getting ready to hit this kinked rail. Check out Reho’s rig on the drop in.

Joe testing out the custom drop in.

Sexton at his finest. Front board with such finess.

Simon sendin’er during a night session.

Stay tuned for Part 2 - Next stop Joetsu Kokusai resort for the Slope contest.

Mute Math Interview Part IV

by: Travis | Wednesday, February 27, 2008

etnies blog image

Unfortunately this is the last installment of our interview with Mute Math, we will be putting the interview up in its entirety in the next week on Mute Math's artist page. Enjoy!

Are the songs you write 100% Mute Math or do the record companies have any say on how your songs sound?

Yeah record companies that do that should only be doing that for artists who want the help. That’s why we created our own label, because we wanted to be left alone. When it’s time to create, you don’t want people breathing down your neck telling you what to do or what to say. That chokes the life out of creating music in the first place.

We wanted to create an environment where we could just do our thing and we think we have with Teleprompt and Warner. The goal is to create something that is compelling enough and everyone can rally around it, and then present it to the world, which is how record labels started in the beginning.

Labels were there to help the artist and somehow, through the development of the music industry and big bucks, record companies started creating artists to reach their audience. It wasn’t about trying to find the artist audience; it was about trying to find the record labels audience. That’s when things get dirty and we don’t make music like that, we don’t know how to make music like that. So to help us, we created Telepromt. It’s the best thing we could have done and we make the music we want to make and we say what we want to say.

I heard you guys are tight with Eisley? How did that come about?
Eisley is a great band and are hugely underrated. I remember when we were first starting out we played the Warner Bros. Christmas Party Showcase. At the time WB was still sizing us up to see if they wanted to work with us. We played a disastrous show and all the record execs were there. Thank God there was a lot of alcohol involved, but we sucked. It was really bad. When we were finished with our set no one would even look at us and I’ll tell you what, we went to the back corner and who do you think is there but Eisley. They were the only people that would talk to us. They introduced themselves and were the whole cheering, sisterly kind of compassion that we needed. Ever since then we have had a bond with them and two years later we got to play some shows together.

When you are on tour are you guys healthy or do you visit the local Dairy Freeze in each town?
I’ll tell you what, we try to be healthy. I set out at the beginning of every tour to be healthy because there is nothing worse than getting sick on the road and as a singer it sucks to be sick. I get sick at some point on every tour. I’m determined to break that streak and be healthy all the way through. Roy is pretty good, but the rest of us are slackers.

Who would win in a fight, Matchbox Twenty or Alanis Morissette?
Have you heard Jagged Little Pill? Don’t mess with Alanis, she will hand your ass to you.

What’s the best activity to do while listening to your music? Skateboarding?
No I wouldn’t skateboard, that’s a recipe for disaster. Have you ever heard of those shot-put things that you make yourself in a little ball and get into this little two-seater - you can go with a friend, then you strap on the harness. It’s basically a gigantic slingshot. A couple of your friends pull you down and then shoot you into the air. You kind of go back and forth for a while. Next time you do one of those take your iPod with you and play a little Mute Math and watch as the adrenaline overtakes you.

Do you think your music would go well in a skateboard video?
I don’t know, I’ve never seen our music in a skateboard video. I’ve heard our songs in a lot of snowboard videos. They love to use our song “Reset”. I don’t know if there is a rivalry in those two sports, where if one uses a song then the other one won’t touch it. Is that the case?

No, it all transfers for the most part. Maybe skateboarders need to take a seat in the human slingshot. Besides touring how did you get the band to the public when you first started?
We milked MySpace for everything it was worth. Inviting people on MySpace set up the first tour we ever did. We would see what kind of music they were into and send them an invite to come see us. The Internet just pushed us to think out of the box.

Are your parents Mute Math fans?
My parents? Oh they’ve come around. I think my dad genuinely likes us. My mom doesn’t. She tolerates it because she likes me. My grandfather who is a great entertainer made a cameo on our New Orleans show at Voodoo Fest. He came out and played the Ukulele. While he was on-stage we interviewed him and he candidly pointed out that our music is not necessarily his thing. Our family has a good time with it.

Where haven’t you toured that you would like too?
Japan, which we are supposed to play soon, we are really excited for Japan.

Well that’s about it. You got anything else you would like to say?
Thank you for all the shoes, they really helped with the Typical video. You guys kept hooking us up and we really needed them. We kept going through them like toilet paper.

Be sure to check Mute Math's new collab denim!

Todd Potter

Todd Potter was out at the NASCAR races over the weekend for some FMX demos with Mulisha teammates Jimmy Fitzpatrick and Ryan Hagy. Unfortunately the Sunday shows were rained out. But Saturday the shows went off without a hitch and Potter was going nuts on Shane Trittler's new ramp-to-ramp setup. The take off ramp is 3 feet wider and the landing ramp is 7 feet wider than the old setup, making it much easier for Potter to throw bigger tricks as wells as his upside down whips as seen below!

More Mary

by: Alex | Monday, February 25, 2008

We've been busy little bees in the GvR hive, but still had a chance to catch up with Featured Rider Mary Osborne. She checked in to give us the following update on her own personal goings on of late.

Mary writes:

I was in Hawaii before and after Christmas for a Patagonia photo shoot.

mary osborne mammoth

Immediately after Hawaii I went straight up to Mammoth for what I like to call "cross-training." We had a group of about 15 close friends and scored perfect powder. I did my first "powder tree run"...keep in mind I am like a fish out of water because I have only seen snow fall a number of times. It's always very exciting for me.

Straight from Mammoth MTN I went to a photo shoot for Wet n Wild cosmetics. I should have pics soon for you.

ASR was a huge success as we launched the Mary Osborne Pro surfboard model by Robert August. The picture is my "Pink Panther" Surfboard model and my friend/artist who did my logo Shannon Menzel.

mary osborne robert august

I am finally home again in little old Ventura. I love it here this time of year, especially when the great waves and beautiful February weather rolls in. I have been surfing Rincon as much as possible, filming and shooting photos.

Last week I spoke at Fillmore Elementary School for a huge skate demo called Skate Pass. This is the first school in California to incorporate skateboarding into PE Curriculum. I basically spoke in front of about 800 kids about skateboarding/surfing and how they both have changed my life. The school is so lucky to have this opportunity and what fun for the kids. Here are a few articles....

"The Fuel TV segment will begin airing tomorrow on Fox Sports Net and continue to run through the week on Fuel TV (28 times). Both Time Warner and ABC went out to the school this week to shoot segments. The ABC segment will run Feb 26 in the AM and the TW will run on Headline news sometime soon. "

"California Approves Skateboarding Curriculum!
Skate Pass, the company bringing skateboarding to schools, has been welcomed into California. California is now the 10th state in the country to approve the curriculum, making history for both skateboarding and the state.

“California has strict physical education standards, which makes this event an incredible opportunity to promote skateboarding to both the state and the country.” Says Eric Klassen Skate Pass Co-Founder.

"Skate Pass is coordinating a press event at Fillmore Middle School on February 5th, 2008. The event will represent a shift for physical education as well as profile skateboarding as helping state and national efforts to fight childhood obesity. The high energy event will include demos and speakers from skateboarding and government health organizations."

"Paul Schmidt, George Powell, Steve Berra were among the invited guests who spoke about skateboarding."

Last week I did a big interview for Ventura Life Magazine. It should be coming out next month.

I think that is it for now. I'll keep you updated as things progress.

THANKS!

Thank YOU, Mary!

Jimmy Marchand!

by: Brink | Sunday, February 24, 2008

The Skateboard Mag
linked to Jimmy Marchand's sponsor me video one day, and I got really stoked. So stoked and inspired in fact, that I found Jimmy on MySpace and asked if I could send him some etnies shoes (He's a fan of the Arto Mids.) He sent then me this footy you see above via email to check out... and yeah, that's a switch backside flip to manny down a bank.

After watching it, I explained to Jimmy I felt he could have done the backside noseblunt a little better. His reply:

"Well to tell ya the truth I had just eaten a special brownie a half hour prior to that noseblunt going down, so it was alright with me."

And I decided at that very moment I wanted to interview him. So over the last few months, via email and at Tampa Am, I did.

RB: Tell us about your condition…
Jimmy: Well I have what is called scoliosis, which is a curve of the spine. I also had blood clots in my legs when I was born so it kind of stopped me from growing.

Were you born with scoliosis? How did it affect you growing up?
Yes I’ve had this condition all my life but it has not brought my morale down in anyway. I actually started walking with a walker when I was young, but by the time I was five the doctor switched me to Canadian-style crutches because I could literally do handstands on my walker! Once I was off of the walker and onto crutches I figured “shit, what the hell else is possible?”

How’d you get into skating?
So when I was about eight or nine the kid next door to me had gotten a skateboard and wouldn't let me try the damn thing. So I went out and got one of my own. An 80's deluxe banana board. My doctors have always told me that its good to keep my self active, but they did not think skating was safe for me.

Well, it’s been about ten years since I’ve been told to stop skating because its dangerous, but I feel its what keeps me alive. When I started skating I had a dog at the time and I wasn’t good at pushing the board yet, so I took the dog for a walk down the bike path and he pulled me so fast on my board that I could have shit myself. So since that day I’ve wanted to go fast and always skate, skate, skate!

marchandtampa

Do people hate on you or talk shit? Or maybe even react weird to you over the years?
I’d have to say “fuck ya” to that one! Lots of times I get kids that come up to me an say that I’m cheating an that it isn’t really skating or some shit like that.

Did anyone tell you that you wouldn't be able to skate? Or have more people been cool and positive about it?
No one has ever told me I couldn’t skate but doctors that I grew up seeing have told me to switch to bowling or something more mellow like that.

What’s the most common thing people say to you about your condition or your skating?
Usually when I travel out West, people tend to give me props for skating and ask how I can do the stuff I do. People tend to ask me if I can ollie.

Are you in pain from your scoliosis? like does it hurt to skate even if you don't fall or anything?
From time to time I get sore from having scoliosis, but nothing a hot shower can't fix.

What are your favorite skate videos?
I’d have to go with Shorty’s Fulfill the Dream because of the skating and music selection. Welcome to Hell by Toy Machine and anything 5-Boro puts out because those guys skate with soul!

Who are your favorite skaters?
My favorite skaters would have to be Aquil Brathwaite, Nick Dompierre, Zered Basset, Pete Eldridge, Jereme Rogers, P-Rod, Apples, and everyone at home.

Did you get a lot of email or attention from your skate videos on the web? The one I saw and wrote to you about originally?
I’ve gotten some feedback from my skate video online and managed to get myself some flow packages every now and then.

You got a girlfriend?
No girl, so holla at me, ladies!

What do you wanna be when you grow up?
Well lets’ see, I’m 24 now so when I grow up I’d like to be a more tranquil person. And still be able to roll down the street on that bad Larry!

marchandtampa2

So what was the first trick you learned?
I’d have to say the first trick I learned was a fakie shove-it.

Because of your scoliosis, how do you have to skate and do things differently than other skaters? Like, can you not pop or jump of flick? What’s the deal?
Well, basically I cant ollie. I kinda do everything by pressure flipping and by popping the board one-footed, and then just hope I land the shit! It’s just really hard to explain my style of skating. I love it and the fact that I can’t even tell you how I pull shit off boggles my mind!

What’s your favorite stuff to skate?
Favorite shit to skate? Hmm… well flatland has always been my thing, but since I’ve progressed, I’d have to say banks, hubba sets, tranny, ledges… anything in the street that looks like ya can fuck with. I stay away from the damn handrails fool! I’d like to keep my nuts for a while.

What’s the newest thing you learned?
One -footed pop shove-it 50 -50. I’ve been getting into a habit of trying shit down stairs lately. But for me it's a lot harder to accomplish than you might think. Since I cant ollie, I have to pressure flip every trick down a set in order to land it. Lots of times it doesn’t work out. But never-the-less, its intense and fun!

Do you fuck up a lot of sets of crutches?
I do fuck up lots of crutches. Sometimes ill be at a spot an the shit will snap first try! I go through a few pairs every few months. And they’re expensive as hell.

Can you beat anyone you know in arm wrestling?
Arm wrestling I'm pretty good at, because I pump using my arms. I get a good work out.

What’s been your worst skating-related injury?
The worst thing I’ve ever done is almost tear my ACL. My knee was swollen like a grapefruit for a few weeks.

How was Tampa Am for you?
Going into Tampa Am was like crossing a 12 lane highway on your skateboard and hoping for the best! At one point I felt so nervous that Jello legs just took over, and the board was everywhere.

How was it skating in practice for you? A few times I thought you were gonna get clobbered, dude.
You must have missed the collision then. I was going for a salad grind on the quarter pipe and I ran into some kid full force!

How bout your runs? I think you didn’t do much in your first but your second you landed a bunch of things...
Haha, well actually I totally blew those two runs, man! The atmosphere was all so new to me I couldn’t relax.

How’d you feel after? People seemed to be going nuts for you.
After my runs I was so relieved to come out of there not too banged up! So right after that I left the course an got the sickest free tattoo.

Here's Jimmy's second run from Tampa Am '08

Get into any trouble while you were down in Tampa?
Well, if by trouble you mean running from white Dodge Duragos with flashing lights at 3:30 AM, then yes! Oh an there was a rumor going around that I had gotten into a fight with the door man at the skate park.

Wait? What happened?
Well at the end of the night everyone’s outside at the club and a fight breaks out and people are punching everybody, so cops show up in durangos. Meanwhile the Flip team manager and I flee with two chicks we met. We hop into a cab at 3:30 am and that’s the last the we remember of that night!

And what about the doorman?
I didn’t really fight the door man. I got into an argument with him because he told me I couldn't bring my board in. So I said, "If your not gonna let me bring my board in then I’m going to go around the fuckin' back." So then he let me in.

What are your plans for ’08?
I hope to enter more contests and get over being so nervous! Also work on getting some more coverage. People seemed to like what they witnessed!

Also, what would you say to anyone else who might have a condition like yours, or a disability, that is thinking about skating or something like that? Perhaps there's a few people out there, or a lot of people, who think they just arent able to do it or scared to try?
I'd have to say that anyone that is handicapped in anyway should always stay positive! And shit if your already in crutches how much worse can it get? Skate 'till you cant walk anymore!

Regular Reigns Supreme

by: Alex | Saturday, February 23, 2008

gvr glags

So I was wrong; the Goofy Team did not win today's GvR. The thing is, I sort of have a problem saying that Regular is better. Can Regular ever be anything other than...just plain regular? Alright, I'm of the goofy persuasion...one thing I will say, is that Regular Footer Dave Fortin is anything but regular. He is one crazy mother--shut yo mouth!

Big Black GvR Snow Bus!

by: Travis | Friday, February 22, 2008

Getting the GvR Snow bus up to Bear Mountain was quite the exercise in faith seeing as how road conditions have been terrible and Southern Californians have no idea of how to drive in such weather.

GvR Snow goes down tomorrow bright and early, 8am. Finals are at 1pm. The weather is looking good, the course is gnarly huge and Ghostface Killah made his flight. We are set.

GvR Sneak Peak Hip Photo!

This photo was taken last night of the soon to be infamous Hip kicker for the inaugural GvR Snow event. The kicker isn't anywhere near completion and it's already giant sized. So get ready for riders going off and getting broke. What makes this hit even more exciting is that it is located literally feet from the sun deck. So everyone will have prime real-estate to see the blood flow.

I forgot to mention the run-out is looking like the craziest part of the Hip feature. So yes, you will definitely want to be here on Saturday!

What's more is Ghostface will be killin' it after the event on the sun deck and there will be mad giveaway's. So be sure to make it up.

GvR Practice Cancelled For Friday!

by: Travis | Wednesday, February 20, 2008

Due to the current weather system, it looks like there will be no practice for GvR on Friday. It is dumping at Bear Mountain right now and the crew building the course will need some more time to make everything primo, so all the riders can go that much bigger the day of the contest. Right?

Stay tuned for updates, but plan to get plenty of sleep Friday night—it’ll be bluebird with freshies on Saturday morning! Or at least we hope so!

Mute Math Interview Part III

by: Travis | Wednesday, February 20, 2008

etnies blog image

Mute Math Interview Part III

- In this week’s installment, lead singer Paul Meany describes how weird playing TV shows in England can be, how Mute Math has made their way into the hearts of their fans, his favorite bands to see live and much, much more!

What one thing has helped Mute Math reach your public the most?
Well, when we made the Typical video. That was a shot in the arm for us. Our record had been out for over a year and we were touring on a small level and we knew we needed some sort of video to help push us. Warner Brothers were stumped and maybe a bit disenchanted, but after we made the video everything came to life. Warner Bros. got excited and MTV started giving us some exposure. We felt like something had happened. It wasn’t some exponential explosion by any means, but it kinda kept the show on the road. It really helped us do another tour and now we just found out yesterday that the Typical video has been Grammy nominated. We were pretty much beside ourselves. The video is up against Feist and the Justice dance video. Have you seen that video? It’s freakin’ ridiculous. Now we get to see what the Grammys are all about.

You guys have been playing lots of Late Night TV shows, are those kind of weird and stressful?
No, I love them, but in the beginning it seemed strange. I guess we were lucky and got to do some smaller shows that helped break us in. I remember when we did Craig Ferguson we didn’t even know about the show, but we had a great time anyway. It was kind of hard to be nervous about it. Now, when we got to do Letterman that was a feeling of “Holy hell we are playing the Ed Sullivan Theater!”

We’ve been fans since we were kids, so being there was an amazing feeling. We’ve learned to enjoy performing on TV shows; they are a whole different animal. Learning how to make the music translate through the TV and perform and not think about it can be tough. Luckily for us we’ve had lots of fans show up to those TV tapings, which is very encouraging, especially when we played Conan.

It must make it easier to have your fans there to cheer you on. If it were silent on the set then it would be weird and so much harder to perform, I would think.
We’ve done those also. The silent shows. Those are weird. They have these shows in England where you roll up to the TV studio, plug in your instruments and they roll cameras with no studio audience. I think that’s what the Brits like. I don’t think we’ve found our footing with those shows yet.

The Matchbox Twenty tour is coming up soon. How did that tour come about?
They called us a couple of months ago. I think we were their first choice. We gleefully obliged. This will be the biggest crowd we will have played for.

Do you think your music will translate to their crowd?
Absolutely, put us in front of anyone. As long as there are people willing to listen, then that’s who we want to play for. I don’t get sidetracked if their music fits ours. I mean we have toured with a lot of people and our music is in such a weird category anyway.

I don’t know how to describe our music, but we’re just trying to get it to people. I think there is something that happens when we play our music, there is an unsaid articulation that happens when something clicks with the crowd, after that it’s up to the crowd to make their decision if they like us or not. Any opportunity we get to open for almost any band has always been great for us. Except for maybe the Chevelle show.

Do kids dance at your shows?
Yeah, I like to think so. I don’t know if you can call it that, but there is definitely movement.

It must help to see the crowd getting their dance on?
Oh, you mean the crowd dancing? Well that varies. When there are people who know who we are there is usually various movements going on, but when we are opening we usually get stared down really good. Most people don’t know how to process what we are doing, which is good. I think one of the biggest rushes for this band is when we go out in front of a crowd that knows nothing about us and we play our set and it goes from silence in the beginning, to by the end of our set we have made some new friends.

Who are your favorite bands to see live?
There are tons of bands. Let’s see, who am I going to give it to? Umm, let’s start with the Flaming Lips one of the more incredible shows. I just saw Feist a few months ago and I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a more perfect performance. She is an angel and did an incredible job. One of my first obsessions was The Police. There is something really infectious about seeing them live. I never got to see them when I was a kid but when we did Bonaroo, The Police were on the bill, which was another crowning achievement for me. That was a chill bump moment. Plus no one thought The Police were going to get back together.

- Mute Math’s last interview installment will be next week. Be sure to stay tuned!
