Baco-a-go-go Halloween Jam!

Posted by: Brink | Wednesday, October 31, 2007

baco0

Why even go to comps anymore? Contests come and go. There’s an event pretty much every weekend. There’s not too much to set them apart. They all seem to blend together: same format, same tricks, same dudes winning, blah blah blah. They just seem so clinical and easily forgettable and not really even a true representation of what riding is about in my opinion anyways.

I remember when it used to be fun going to comps, seeing your friends. It wasn’t so much about the results or the comp itself, as much as hanging out with everyone you only get to see once in a while. Time for a change in my opinion!

baco2

Baco comps have been around for a good few years now, not necessarily the biggest comps and definitely not about the next big trick or boosting anyone’s egos. They’ve taken it back to what an event used to mean to me. Good times and fun.

What better time to have a get together than Halloween or have an event if you’re interested in having fun with your buddies? Baco does everything they can to make sure whoever shows up has a really good time. Obviously being an event based around Halloween, costumes are a must. And not just after hours. Many guys (and girls) rode the comp in full costumes, whether it be a Tony Neyer in his gladiator outfit, Brian Kachinky’s Pillsbury Dough Boy to Mark Mulville as Paul Stanley from Kiss in complete reunion tour make up, the event is all about fun and even the audience shows up in full garb. Good times.

baco3

Some people are probably regretting some choices they made at the event. Outside the park they had a tattoo booth set up with free tattoos. Yeah, real tattoo’s, none of this henna shit! There’s definitely people waking up today with Morgan Wade and Dave Freimuth’s names tattooed on their asses. And not just one or two people, either.

Back to the comp. Highlights from the day (if they can be considered highlights?) were a streaking BMXer, complete with swinging junk, not sure that went over too well with some of the parents in attendance but what can you expect when the event has a beer sponsor? BMXers aren’t normal by any means!

baco4

When it came to riding, some good stuff went down. The usual comp tricks like flips and spins from certain individuals, but also more tech stuff that riders would appreciate. And having a jam format finals is always the way to go. It lets guys get creative and also try things multiple times without being penalized because of it. Having Catfish behind the mic is nothing but a side splitting comedy fest. At the end of the day when the smoke cleared, Morgan came out on top, but it wasn’t without a fight. Some guys either stuck to one area of the park doing their thing. Some guys just went fast and did fewer tricks but had style and some guys stuck to one style of tricks. I guess Morgan must have had a good mix of everything. Can’t wait till next year. Thanks Chad.

Stephen Murray Auction!

Posted by: Brink | Monday, October 29, 2007

I’m sure by now most of you are familiar with the life-changing injuries that Stephen Murray sustained back in June at the Baltimore Dew Tour.

This accident occurred just days prior to Props Rock-N-Roll Tour hitting the road. Obviously, Stephen Murray was heavy on our minds the entire trip. Like almost everybody in the BMX world, we wanted to do what we could to help out.

By the end of the trip, I had talked to some of the riders and we decided that we would auction off some of their bikes to help out the Murray family with their mounting medical bills. We even had a few guys who weren’t on the trip who wanted to lend a hand and donate their bikes.

I am happy to tell you that we have a total of 11 complete bikes to auction off. All of these bikes are autographed by the rider who is donating it (except for the DC/SE P.K. Ripper). Each bike will also come with a autographed photo of the rider with the bike.

Below are the dates that each bike will be auctioned off (each one will become a hotlink when auction is running - so check back often).

Nov. 1-10 - Mat Hoffman’s Hoffman Bikes Condor
Nov. 3-12 - Chase Hawk’s Fit Hawk
Nov. 5-14 - Mike Aitken’s Fit S3 Aitken
Nov. 7-16 - Rob Wise’s Mirraco Fivestar
Nov. 9-18 - Morgan Wade’s Mutiny Captain
Nov. 11-20 - Corey Martinez’s United Trinity
Nov. 13-22 - Etnies “Ghost Rider” bike
Nov. 15-24 - Ruben Alcantara’s T1 Ruben
Nov. 17-26 - Sergio Layos’ Fly Pantera
Nov. 19-28 - Nora Cup D.C./SE P.K. Ripper
Nov. 21-30 - Tim “Fuzzy” Hall’s Redline

Check out pics of all the auction items.

We’ll also be auctioning off a Levis banner, T-shirt, and piece of metal, all signed by the Rock-N-Roll 2 riders. Brian Kachinsky and Aaron Ross left their helmets, and these will be up for auction. Finally, some Hoffman DVDs signed by Mat himself.

We would like to personally thank all of these riders and their sponsors for being involved in this cause. Stay strong Stephen Murray.

etnies Two Wheel Tour

The 2nd Annual etnies Two Wheel Tour has officially started! The guys are jumping on their Harley's and heading up North to hit some of the sickest riding spots in Nor-Cal and piss some people off along the way!

The guy's headed out the other day and have already hit up Jackpot Ranch for a sick session and photo shoot with the guys from Transworld MX. Updates and photos from the road will be coming in soon so check back. For now check the goods from last year's trip here.

Here's the game plan for the trip:

Wednesday: Head up to Jackpot Ranch (about 30 miles North of Santa Barbara) to ride motos and shoot photos. Ride 'til dark, then get on the Harley's and head to the Hotel in San Louis Obispo for the night.

Thursday: Ride Harley's up the coast to Monterey, continue to Oakhurst and stay the night. This is about a 6-7 hour Harley ride!

Friday: Ride motos up in the Mammoth trails below Yosemite with Jeremy Carter's buddies that live in Coarsegold. That night we will stay in Oakhurst once again.

Saturday: Fire up the Harley's and check out Yosemite National Park.

Sunday: Free FMX demo/fund raiser for Jeremy Carter's family at the Chukchansi Casino on Sunday at 4pm. Get directions. Come out and check the demo!
After the show we load up and head home. Trip over.

All these guys will be on the trip... some will stay longer than other because of schedules.

Hannu Blog!

Posted by: Brink | Friday, October 26, 2007

Mr. Hannu Cools wrote in with his own personal blog update this week!

hannu1

Everything fine in here, except for the weather off course. Cold, early dark, wet! Damn I feel like I should book a ticket to Australia again!

Okay, now the good news. You remember I made a design for a bowl in Antwerp? Well they asked to much it would cost to build it and Team Pain made their own design!

I was a bit bummed because I spent loads of time on it! As I speak the bowl is getting finished and I guess I have to thank them for making their own design. It is crazyness... full pipe, big vert parts, tight swimming pool trannys with pool coping... damn I want to ride there so bad. I hope we will have a couple of sunny winter days!

Belgium seems to have concrete fever! Parks are being built all over the place. Last weekend I visited one in Namen. Not big, but fun and good location just next to the river. A guy there named Matthieu Capoen took some pics, so thanks, Matthieu!

hannu5

We also where able to ride our trails for about the last time this year. It was funny with all the fallen leaves and mushrooms on the jumps.

I'm working three days a week from sunrise 'til sunset. A lot of garden building this time of the year. I recently bought an accordian, which keeps me busy when I come home tired from work... damn I love playing it! I also try to spend time with my girlfriend, we know each other for a year now so that needs some celebration... trying to plan a long weekend to a Apanish island so we can swim in the ocean.

That's about it for the moment.

Greetz,

Hannuman

Danny Larsen Visits the Czech Republic

Posted by: Travis | Wednesday, October 24, 2007

Our etnies Euro rocker and ThirtyTwo team rider Danny Larsen just got back from the Czech Republic. While there he hooked up the press with a radio interview, a shop opening, a signing session and the Pirate Walk the Plank video premiere.

etnies blog image

It was Danny’s first radio interview and here’s his little story:

Well, I’m back from Prague, that was a fun and hectic trip. I Got up at four a.m. on Friday morning and arrived in Prague at 10 a.m. Got picked up by Anna Simonkova from K2 Czech and was taken straight to the Free Magazine office. A great bunch of guys. I was there for only about half an hour, but managed to get some pics, a T-shirt and a board (the main prize at the premiere) signed before we (Renda the editor and Ondrej, writer for Free magazine) left for lunch.

After lunch we headed for a radio interview on one of the big radio channels. It was a pretty fun experience and my first time in a radio studio. The interview lasted for about five minutes, I guess. They even played Motörhead for me (they play mostly pop/hip-hop).

After the interview Ondrej and I were dropped of downtown while Renda headed out to fix up the club for the night. We then headed out to the brand new K2 store in the middle of Prague. The store was pretty damn cool. The guys had done a pretty damn good job making a great K2 snowboard store. We attended the official opening of the store (at least I think so, my Czech is a bit rusty), followed by some autograph signing and drinks. I actually got to sign my first cell phone and pair of tits ever. Well, to be honest I had to sign the tits of a Czech K2 rider and I had to draw the tits on his t-shirt. But first tits signing ever! I also signed the store toilet, a great experience even though it kinda smelled of... well, toilet, when I had to squat down and sign it.

After some interviews for different mags and TV stations we headed to the club. After we got to the club things got a little blurry. We had some beers while the place filled up.

After this the alcohol level and my lack of sleep started catching up with me. But we showed the film, got to throw out loads of stash and give away a full K2 setup to a lucky winner. The guy who won it was so fucking happy, ha-ha, it was great to see the winner was a guy who really appreciated it.

After that point I tried to find spots backstage where I could get a quick power nap, unfortunately people kept finding me right when I was about to fall asleep and ended up bringing me back into the club and bar.

I even won a dance off against a bodybuilder, I think he was gay.

Here are some photos of the party. Enjoy!

etnies blog image

Now that you are on the ThirtyTwo Pro Team do you feel that you are at the top of your game?
Me? No, I’m still a baby. I’ve got lots of work to do.

What riders are at the top of snowboarding right now?
For women I would say Leanne Pelosi. She’s been killing it for several years. Also Tara Dakides, Hana Beamen and Natasha Zurek are up there.

Who are your sponsors?
Rome, Oakley, Red Bull, etnies, Whistler Blackcomb, Axis Board Shop and Magical Go-Go Wax. Not only do they make wax but they also make snorkels for when you ride in powder, that’s going to be the new style.

Current snowboarders that you look up to?
There are a bunch. Some have more style than others. Some are more consistent,. Some are more technical. I like to see people ride with personality, like Laura Hadar. You can tell she’s a badass. Andrew Hardingham. He’s not that well known but he’s gnarly and he does these home videos that are super fun to watch.

Who influenced you to get to this point?
Tara Dakides, Barrett Christy, Nicola Thost, JP Walker. I don’t know what tricks they did to influence me back then but I thought they looked happy when I would watch their video parts.

What’s up with contests?
Here’s the thing with women riders and contests: the more conservative you are the more likely you are to land your ticks, which then leads to contest wins. Women riders are not at that level of throwing huge tricks and landing every time like the guys are, but contests are a good place to get exposure. Guys, well they can’t be conservative because tons of riders will land their runs but women aren’t to that point yet. Sometimes straight airs and 360s will still win some of the women contests.

Where does the most progression for the sport take place?
Free-riding and filming. You get the whole winter to try to learn new tricks and to land them on film so what comes out of those days is your best. With contests you can land lame tricks and win. I don’t want to win off a backside three ‘cause I will feel like shit. I would rather try harder tricks and not land them than win off a three or a straight air.

How can they make contests better for the progression of the sport and for riders?
I wish the judges would pay more attention. It’s too obvious when someone throws a rad trick and they don’t win. You think "Were the judges even watching?" But sometimes you will win and you will feel like you don’t deserve it. Everyone knows who should have won.

Contests you are entering this year?
Vail Sessions, Vans Cup, Abominable Snowjam, GvR. Go Regular!

Any scariest moments?
I have had a lot of those. Sometimes when you are in the air and you know you are going down. You feel like "This is the end of my season and my career!" That happened at Super Park last year when we were hitting this 85-footer and I landed on the knuckle and bounced halfway down the landing. But I was fine.

Where is home?
Whistler Blackcomb. That’s where I live now.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in a really small town about an hour outside of Quebec, it’s absolutely beautiful there. There was no park at the local mountain, La Massif, just a lot of free-riding. I would ride with my brothers in the woods. We were always trying to find powder. La Massif doesn’t really have a lot of cliffs because all the cliffs they do have are surrounded by trees.

What’s your favorite part of snowboarding?
Riding with your friends and having fun. It’s fun to do contests, but the best is in the Spring with your friends, trying new tricks and ugly grabs.

What new tricks you are working on?
I want to learn all four sevens. I can’t do backside or cab sevens yet. I also want to land a front-side 1080. I’ve been trying to get that one but it keeps alluding me. Last year Red Bull put on a shoot just for me to land my first 1080. The shoot lasted for a week and I never landed it. I felt bad because the whole shoot was for me to land the 1080 but it just didn’t work out. I want to get that trick.

Do you spin front-side off of your heels or toes?
I spin off my heels.

How long have you been riding?
12 years.

How old are you?
I’m 23.

How did you get started in snowboarding?
My brothers got me into it. My Dad had bought a season pass and my brothers went straight to snowboarding and I went skiing with my Dad. After a day of skiing I was like this is lame and my brothers were having so much fun snowboarding. I new I had to get on that program. So the next day I went snowboarding and my brothers were bummed because they thought I would be tagging along all the time and they were older and cooler. But they were cool. They helped me out a lot.

etnies blog image

Favorite ThirtyTwo boot to ride?
The Lashed. I like a softer boot and the Lashed look amazing. The Vela is really good also. I rode the Broport all of last year and they were really good to me. They are still in prefect condition.

Favorite etnies shoe?
The Callicuts and the Hi-Top’s.

How do you feel about hi-fives?
Is this a trap? I think high-fives are awesome. High-fives all around.

High-fives or rocks?
I like the handshake and if someone does the rock, I do the rock and then act like I’m gonna smoke the rock and then uh-uh, oh no, I’m not down for that. So I throw the rock on the ground.

Film crews you are working with?
This year I filmed with Rome, they were so cool because they wanted me to have a full part. I also shot with Runway, which was super good and maybe I will film with both of those crews this next year.

What are your biggest achievements?
My part in Any Means. It couldn’t have been better. I mean it could have been better of course. It was just so fun, and I’m stoked on how my part turned out. It’s not always easy to film with guys, I wouldn’t want to be in Alaska with Jeremy Jones or anything. But the guys push me more. Girls aren’t as experienced and tend to over-think things. The guys will also hit all the kickers first. So I can judge how they hit them and watch and learn. Also, the guys get pumped when I land something, but the girls are more competitive with one another and I don’t want to have to deal with competition, especially when you just want to do good for yourself, I hate the vibe.

Who is your favorite band?
That’s too hard. I couldn’t tell you, it changes all the time but if I had to choose one it would be Patsy Kline. Artists that I’m listening to now would be Regina Spektor, Rage Against the Machine, Anti-Flag, the stuff I listened to in high school and some Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, some techno.

Do you have any hobbies outside of snowboarding?
I like animals, all of them.

Do you have a collection?
I used to. I like spending a lot of time in nature. I received a degree in Ecology and have always loved to learn all about that stuff. Leaning about ecosystems and having aquariums with fish and salamanders is amazing.

What else do you rock?
I like trying to surf, I’m a beginner but it doesn’t matter to me because just being out on the water is great. I also like skating mini ramp.

If you weren’t a pro snowboarder what would you be?
I would be a hippie in the woods harvesting sea horses. Sea horses are my favorite animal.

What trips are in the works for this year?
I might go to Russia. Red Bull and Oakley put a trip together for cat-boarding and heli-boarding that I might be in on. These trips are always last minute and I’m sure there will be more trips.

Twitch - Potter

Todd Potter

Less than a month after breaking his ankle at the Salt Lake Dew Tour round, Twitch came back to place 2nd at the final round in Orlando! Flipping all the big dirt hits and a crazy transfer line in the wet and sandy Florida dirt was more than enough to get Twitch back on top. Congrats, buddy!

Then we have Todd Potter. The guy is blowing up! X Games Gold, X Games Bronze and Dew Tour Podiums all in only a couple month's time! Potter backed it up this weekend with 3rd place in Orlando, proving he's one of the guys to beat on a consistent basis!

Our Japanese import, Taka, rounded out the top 5! Photos, yo.

Regular Takes It!

gvrsurf

Oceanside, Calif. – The Regular team dominated the etnies GvR of Surf finals in Oceanside today, with offshore winds and consistent head-high surf making the conditions arguably the best SoCal’s seen this year! Regular footer Sebastian Zeitz was a barrel magnet throughout the finals earning first place and the team’s MVP title.

sebastian
Sebastian spent a lot of time in the shade.

The Regulars elected Surfing magazine’s editor-in-chief, Evan Slater, Team Captain. When the final buzzer sounded, signifying the end of the contest, the Regular riders poured an ice-chest over his head and started throwing some high-fives!

gvrsurfcheck
Psyched on taking home $8,000, Sebastian held his giant check up high after Pierre André Senizergues, CEO and owner of etnies, presented it to him.

Wearing the captain’s hat for the Goofy’s team was TransWorld Surf editor Chris Coté—and he had more pride for his stance than anyone. With a red wetsuit and jacket, Coté wore the Goofy team’s color in and out of the water all weekend, hired sign twirlers to campaign for the Goofy team on street corners in Oceanside and stuck “Team Goofy” signs up and down the beach!

GvR Results:

Total Weekend Prize Purse – $50,000

Regular Team:

1. Team MVP Sebastian Zietz – $8,000
2. Jay Thompson – $4,500
3. Austin Ware -- $2,000

Goofy Team:

1. * Timmy Curran – $2,000

etnies and Blinde Eyewear Bash in Oz!

Posted by: Brink | Wednesday, October 17, 2007

blinde2

To celebrate etnies and Blinde Eyewear's new upcoming lines for 2008, both companies threw a 'lil evening bash in Sydney at the MTV Gallery, Darlinghurst on Friday, the 12th of October

Seeing as it is the month of October, the theme for the evening was "Fantasy", and all who were invited were encouraged to dress in black attire... because after all, who doesn’t like black (or Halloween, for that matter)?

Gorgeous models, DJ’s, coffins, bats, spider webs, bubbling cauldrons, lots of free booze (the crux of a good shindig) and plenty of good grinds delivered the mood. And of course, Aussie lads Faker rocking out the crowded gallery as it throbbed to capacity. It all for an exceptional night, as Sydney prepares itself for the greatest time of year, the Australian Summer.

blinde6

With etnies/Blinde rider Mark Mathews gallivanting around the globe, chasing big waves and therefore unable to attend, it was left to our boy, the ever relaxed and humble air freak, Mr Asher Pacey, to hold it down for both companies signing autographs and rubbing shoulders with the 350 or so crew who ventured out this evening to see what was the good stuff coming up in footwear and shades for Oz.

Our crew is already working hard with the project and we got some good shots from last
week when filming the intro for the movie. Northern Scrapbook shows you the making of
a snowboard movie. However the whole Scrapbook Project DVD has a lot more to offer
than this documentary. Wait to see more.

BK Update! Stolen Cars!

Posted by: Brink | Wednesday, October 17, 2007

bkcar

The past few weeks have been filled with some ups and downs. The ups started with a great trip to Vegas for Interbike. Nora cup was great, congrats Aaron and Jamie! The guys at Ride BMX magazine really did a great job of making it a night to remember. Mini Kiss played which was the icing on the cake. Kevin Porter got married the next night (thanks Povah for the fresh kicks for the wedding) and following the wedding who did we meet but Mr. Kiss himself, Gene Simmons. WILD!

Even more recently I was invited to a contest in Berlin Germany called the T-Mobile Extreme Playground. It was a great time with a different course from the norm (a good variety of tranny, wedges and rails) and different format (head-to-head sudden death) Here are some pics from the event! It was a short trip, but thanks to Achim and Andy from Rebel Jam it was one of my best visits to date. Thanks guys!

bkpovah

I got back to Chicago to find out that my car was stolen while I was away. No, not just broken into, completely gone. Police haven't found it yet and while I'd like to remain optimistic, I think my chances of getting it back are slim. I wish very bad things upon the thief. Here is a pic of my car from last winter when it grew a mustache. R.I.P. white civic, we had a good time while it lasted.
