You use it at night when you are asleep. It hardly makes any noise and its job is to make the air a little more moist in the room you are in but not to the point you suffocate. It's of no use while you are absent from the room.
Mum did that for me when my nose was bleeding. Put a small room one on my dresser on a towel and it made a happy light gurgling noise I went to sleep grinning. My nose hasn't bled in months thanks to it.
