Tarah Gieger Fifth Overall in WMA Cup

tarahgiegerhood400_400

Congratulations to etnies Girl team rider Tarah Gieger for placing fifth overall in the WMA Cup at Cycle Ranch MX Park this past Sunday, Nov. 26! The last race of the season got off to a good start with Tarah in second place for the first moto; however, she had bike problems in the second moto, which lead to a late start that left her a lap behind the rest of the pack. Overall, it was a great season for Tarah and we look forward to next year!

Ali's New Pro Model!

Posted by: Brink | Wednesday, November 29, 2006
alishoe
Lace is included on the white/black colorway pictured above.

Just under a year ago, the dynamic of the etnies skate team was forever changed with the addition of Ali Boulala. This January, Ali will take etnies to realms it’s never seen before with his first etnies pro model, the Ali. And considering the Ali is a direct reflection of his eclectic personality, the shoe couldn’t be more appropriately named.

Ali is the undisputed champion of modern skateboarding flair, and he chose to integrate this into the look of his shoe by including lace, a faux ruby on the tongue, another ruby on the heel panel and cowboy-boot-inspired deco stitching on the toe and heel panels. The result of taking Ali’s reputation, personality and design input into consideration, as well as a slim skate silhouette and etnies’ thinnest cup sole ever, is a skateboarding shoe that effortlessly combines performance, style, technology and a little bit of fun.

The Ali features STI System G2™ and STI FoamTM – the most effective shock absorbing system available. STI is the first and only biomechanics research organization dedicated to the study of skateboarding footwear. Keep your eyes peeled for the Ali in '07!

Clifford, Arto, Rune!

Uncle Clifford, etnies Skate Team Manager, sent us this Feast Tour update from the road! Clifford is British and I didn't want to edit his writing too heavily, so if this sounds a little weird, that's why. HAHAHA.

Hello skate rats. Well I am currently in Florida on the final leg of the Flip Feast Southeast tour. There's been some proper capers, I tell thee. It's been Arto and Apple's birthday in the same week after all. Now we get to go to Tampa and try and stay out of trouble. Dear me. Here's several tender teaser photos for your greedy little eyes to devour. check Feast and etnies.com for regular updates and stay tuned more pictures and a full diclosure of the adventures of the tour. Must get off, I have germans to babysit. Nice one.

Two Wheel Tour - Cameron, AZ & Vegas Wrap Up

Posted by: Cropley | Friday, November 10, 2006

For the first time on the TWT (Two Wheel Tour) everyone actually woke up early, got their shit together and got on the road relatively early. It was a-forking-maze-ing! All the stuff that we had been hearing about how sick Cameron was definitely motivated everyone a little, plus we felt bad we flaked on McNeil. Turns out he got over it and left the night before... sorry buddy.

This was the first time I had seen the Grand Canyon in person and, well, it's pretty damn Grand, that's for sure!

Anyways, it didn't take too long to ride to Cameron. And once we got there it didn't take too long for half of the local Navajo tribe to stop by and say "what's up?". They were all really cool and Potter felt right at home as he is part Native American himself. But this one dude was so drunk, or on peyote or something, that he fell over about 20 times and if he said "man, what are you dudes doing over here. Can I come?" (in a barely understandable slur) once, he said it a million times. Sorry bud, there was no room on my bike!

No one really knew what to expect because Ryan and Hank from Freek got there early and rode a little session, but they said they didn't find any good jumps. I'm not really sure where they were riding because the second we got out there we started finding hits all over the place! It's crazy all the possibilities out there!

Potter and Garland were going off on some BIG doubles and hips everywhere. I'm not sure what to say about the place... it's kinda like Ocotillo Wells before hundreds of thousands of people would come out every weekend and blow out everything. Just check the photos and you'll see. It was hard for me to get off my bike and shoot some photos because everything was so fun! But I managed to snap a good amount, so check them out in the Photo Gallery!

After a few solid sessions in the hills we packed up, jumped on our Harley's and pinned it to Las Vegas...

Drinking, gambling, drinking, slots, chicks, blackjack, craps, drinking, poker, machine guns, drinking.... that pretty much sums up our time in Vegas...and it went off! The next morning we stopped by the "Gun Shop" before heading home. The Gun Shop is just that...a gun shop. But the cool part about this gun shop is that you can shoot automatic MACHINE GUNS!!! Hell yeah! There is nothing more fun than holding down the trigger of an Oozy or M16 and blowing the shit out of a Bin Laden poster! Much respect to the guys that do it for real over seas, because it's not that easy!

Well, from Vegas we all rode home and that was all she wrote for the first etnies Two Wheel Tour. Keep checking back for more photos, wallpapers and tons of video in the coming weeks! For now check out the Photo Galleries!

A Niiiceee

Brendan Lutes from Transworld was on hand for all the debauchery on the tour, so you can count on some photos popping up on transworldmotocross.com pretty soon, plus some coverage in an upcoming issue.

The crew from FUEL TV's M80 also came out to shoot for their show, so we'll keep ya posted on air dates and times when they come up.

Of course there would be no tour without riders...Seth, Trigger, Potter, Garland, Deegan, Twitch and McNeil. Thanks! Oh yeah, and let's not forget Chapman the babysitter!

Thanks to Rockstar Energy Drink and Boost Mobile for helping to make this happen.

It's on for next year!

Tour Update - Laughlin to the Grand Canyon

Posted by: Cropley | Friday, November 10, 2006

yummmm, $7 buffet

As you can imagine, waking up Wednesday morning after a night of partyin' in Laughlin was not easy to say the least. After a little breakfast buffet action we finally rallied the troops and got on the road bright and early at 2PM!!! Holy shit! We were supposed to be in Cameron, AZ by Wednesday afternoon to meet up with Jim McNeil. It's about 230 miles from Laughlin to Cameron (4 hours 41 minutes according to Google Maps), so it should be no problem to get there, right? That's what we thought!

Chappy wasn't too happy with the steak house bill... thanks buddy!

So, somewhere around Williams, AZ we stopped for gas. It was getting close to sunset and someone (cough cough Seth) had the bright idea to take a little detour and ride through the Grand Canyon so we could get some photos on the way to Cameron. No problem, except by the time we got to the Grand Canyon it was dark, 30 degrees out and there were Elk in the middle of the road! It's safe to say that those are not prime Harley riding or photo conditions. So everyone voted to stay at a hotel in this little town and ride to Cameron in the morning. After a hearty steak dinner, the best bowling session of all time went down at the local lanes...I forgot my camera, but Lutes got some sick shots that should be on TWMX real soon like.

Then it was off to bed so we could get to Cameron first thing in the A.M. Hopefully McNeil would still be there?!?

Check out the Photo Gallery!

Feast Starts Today!

Posted by: Brink | Thursday, November 9, 2006
feastposter

From November 9 to 20, 2006, Flip and Fury, in conjunction with etnies are teaming up for the Feast Southeast Tour to wreak havoc from Dallas, Texas, to Miami, Florida, and several points along the way.

One look at the names and faces of the pros on the poster should tell you that this is an event that is not to be missed. There are six skatepark demos and four in-store autograph signings planned along the route. At the last Feast Tours, kids traveled up to 12 hours to witness an event of this magnitude, so we are doing everything we can to spread the word far and wide.

As you know, etnies pros Arto Saari, Ali Boulala, Rune Glifberg, and am Eric Fletcher will be part of the mayhem! Be there if you can. If not, stay tuned here on etnies.com and to the sites below for details, video, photo, coverage and more!

Two Wheel Tour Day 2 - Ocotillo Wells

Posted by: Cropley | Wednesday, November 8, 2006

Frickin’ Potter! The guy woke up at 7AM in Ocotillo, geared up and woke up everyone!!! It's all good though. Potter, the Fuel TV guys and I all went out for an early filming session and Potter hit a few sick jumps and found some virgin sand to roost for the cameras.

Brian Deegan and Twitch rolled out too. Deegs just got back on the bike after his broken wrist a few months back and was killing it on a bunch of techy whip jumps. Twitch's leg is still on the mend, but he manage to bring out his 70 and he and Seth, the crippled crew, charged out and went trail riding while everyone else was riding big bikes. For a couple cripples with broken bones they were going up some crazy ass cliffs!

After a solid day of riding we loaded up at sunset and hit the road on the Harley’s! Laughlin was the destination. So, with that in mind and a few hundred miles to go, we pinned it up the I40 to the 95. Somewhere outside of Needles, CA Potter ran out of gas! It could have had something to do with him going 110mph for an hour straight, but who knows… all I know is that he had to push his Harley a couple miles to get some gas. Granted, it was mostly down hill, but when the road did hit a flat spot watching him running along side the bike pushing it was pure comedy…you’ll see the video real soon!

Everyone was beat from the long ride to Laughlin, but magically once we hit the smokey air of the casinos suddenly nobody was tired anymore, but very thirsty for a beer or two. Well you can imagine how that went….

Two Wheel Tour - Day 1

Posted by: Cropley | Monday, November 6, 2006

Well, day one of the etnies Two Wheel Tour is in the books and we finally made it to Ocotillo Wells! After a little IHOP breakfast in Marina Del Rey, Trigger, Seth, Potter, Garland and Chapman picked up their new Harley's at Bartels'. From there we all went up to the filming of the Camp Crusty reality show for no particular reason except for Trigger and Seth to check in (gotta get paid!) and for everyone to steal some free lunch! It was sick to see the setup they had there... foam pit, outdoor track, Supercross track, 50 track, a destroyed F350 truck and Seth's mangled Ford Ranger that got rolled by new race truck driver Mike Metzger! haha

Potter ain't scared

After the Camp Crusty pit stop we pinned it straight to Ocotillo hoping to get in an evening session, but it was totally dark when we pulled up to Pole Line Road... so instead of riding, we started drinking! Yep, so that's how yesterday went.

Barnett is supposed to be coming out tomorrow with Garland's bike and Deegan and Twitch are driving out in the morning. Riding photos will be up right after we get in a couple sessions so check back!

Joe Rich in Shanghai

Posted by: Joe Rich | Saturday, November 4, 2006

Back in 1996, I got a call one day about doing shows in Shanghai, China. I remember being so out of my mind excited as soon as I heard those words. I couldn't believe it. I was going to China. And that was only the start of the conversation. When I asked who else was going, I was told there would be a couple of skateboarders and a couple of in-line skaters, me and Matt. Matt? I thought, Matt who? Then it clicked. Matt Hoffman! It would be literally impossible for me to explain how I felt after hearing that. Half excited, half scared to death. Me doing vert shows with Matt Hoffman? What the fuck were they thinking?

Well, I decided not to question them and just roll with it. And weeks later, there I was, sitting on a plane on my way to China. This was only the third country I had ever been to at this point in my life…Mexico being the first and England being the second. That week was amazing; I had never seen such things. I remember the thing that stuck out the most was the fact of how many people rode bicycles there. A light would turn red and it was not odd at all to see hundreds of people on bikes come to a halt. It was so good! We only ended up doing shows for 1 day and the rest of the time was sight seeing. Not so bad, eh?! I also remember that it was a huge deal that the vert ramp would be staying in Shanghai after we left, as they had nothing even close to a ramp in their city at the time….Little did they know what was to come.

Jump to 2006 now…. About a year ago I got an email from Povah that had a web link included in it. As usual, I clicked on it without thinking to much about what might be on the other end of those little blue highlighted letters…. When the images appeared on the screen my jaw about hit the floor. Shanghai, China boasting to have the largest skatepark in the world! And from what I could tell, they weren't lying. Not only was the park the largest in square footage, but the size of everything was stepped up more than just a notch or 2. The park went so far beyond anything that has ever been built. Imagine your favorite cement park but all juiced up on steroids! "One day" I thought, "One day I have to make it back to China and that park!"

About 2 weeks before Interbike this year, I got a call from Koji Kraft. An unfortunate circumstance had happened to Tom Haugen and he was not going to be able to attend the event at the Shanghai park this year due to a broken leg. Get well soon Tom! The organizers of the event were kind of pressed for time with trying to find someone, so Koji rang me up to see if I could go. I originally thought it wouldn't be possible to make it due to the trade show and the people that were going with me. But in the course of a day, it all became clear that I had to go. Everything magically worked out and the green light was on! A rush Chinese Visa was put in motion as well as a call to my friend Dawn who is a travel agent. It still didn't seem real at all. Trips to far away places never really do to me until I'm actually sitting on the airplane thinking, "this is really happening!" As you can probably tell, I feel like a little kid even still when opportunities present themselves.

Due to how close the trip would be to the Interbike show in Vegas, I flew out of Salt Lake. Elf let me keep my truck and belongings in his driveway, and gave me a ride to the airport too. Sweet as! The flight from Salt Lake to Shanghai would total about 15- 16 hours with a stop off in San Francisco. The good thing about going to China was that jet lag never hits you nearly as bad when you are traveling west. Not to mention that we were crossing the international date line on the way. So I actually left in the afternoon on October 2nd, and arrived in Shanghai at about 6 at night on October 3rd! But when flying home I would leave Shanghai around 1 in the afternoon on October 7th and arrive in San Francisco at 8 in the morning on the same day. Traveling back in time is strange. haha

This trip was such a tease in so many ways because we only rode the park for 2 days. I would have tried to make my stay a bit longer, but due to some prior commitments, it was not possible. So, the day we arrived at the park, I'll talk about that. Oh shit…no picture that I had seen could ever do this place justice. It is beyond your wildest dreams! Bowls that range from 2 feet deep to 17 feet deep! And there is no exaggeration there. A pipe/capsule that is 22 feet tall…how is this possible?! When entering the park, it’s so big that you can't even see to the other end of the park.

Half of the park has pool coping at the tops of the bowls. But it’s set at the perfect depth to not be a hindrance. But this pool coping here has all been hand made. They didn't have cement formed pieces that are available to us here, but they had blocks of granite. So, with effort never being a problem, they carved each and every piece of granite into segments of pool coping ! And to make things make even less sense, there was not one person riding or skating when we got there! There are even marks in the bowls from dirt bike tires. Yeah, as in motorcycles. So here we are in the states, land of the free (haha), having trouble getting bikes into skateparks, and in Communist China, they have motorcycles in the most elaborate park ever built! Hmmmmmmmm…….

We ended up with a day of practice and a day that was run as a contest. I was so tired from riding at the end of the first day that I didn't know how I was going to get up the next morning. We got there and I couldn't decide what to ride first. There were way
