The first day at the etnies Backyard Jam in Sheffield, UK showcased some of the stars of tomorrow as the Under 14 Experts took to Nate Wessells’s champion course. It took the grommets some serious pedalling to pull backflips, tailwhips and impressive airs over the box jump, 10ft quarter, huge wallride and the construction which consists of a shed roof-come-curved-wallride with rails, whoops, a flat bank, step up and a bowled section that all now know as “The Thing.”
The afternoon was ruled by the World Record attempt Bunny Hop competition. Morgan, Ruben, Aaron and Danny all took part. With only a 5 metre run-up, the bar height started at 32 inches. In the first few runs everyone flew over. Coming closer to 36 – 38 inches, riders started to drop off.
Beating his personal best of 36 inches, Morgan bounced (excuse the punch!) out at 40 inches, together with Ruben. Aaron and Danny both cleared 42 inches, but could not compete with New Yorkers Edwin Del Arosa and Tom White who both jumped 43, but it was Tom who claimed the title, with a massive 44 inches.
Everyone were pretty stoked on their first day. Today sees the pro qualifiers, etnies Highest Air, Roundabout premiere and some cheesy dancing before the Long Jump comp, pro finals and best trick comp on Sunday.
Check back on Monday for results, pictures and rider diaries.
Tom White won it!
