Mike Escamilla headed up to San Francisco to hang out with his brother and Redline teammate Dustin Guenther who flew in and the two drove to meet Rich Hirsh and Shad Johnson in Southern Oregon to shoot a Redline ad. They rode a few parks before it started raining so the crew all headed onto Portland for a couple of days before going North into Vancouver BC. The Rooftop3 is in stores now.
Taj Mihelich rode the Banana Farm ramp last week with Sandy Carson and the whole T1 crew. He’s been working hard on getting the T1 ramp ready for the impending SXSW festivities that rolled into town last week, fixing some missing screws and cleaning up the yard. T1 held a show at the ramp for the “Big Monitor Records” show being sponsored by etnies sister company, Emerica. Other than that it’s been business as usual over at T1 for Taj and company. The Roscoe is in stores now.
Ruben Alcantara spent the beginning of the week rapping up things in New Zealand, while getting some final riding, filming and surf sessions done. Saturday he arrived back home in Malaga, Spain where he’s been spending time with his family for the last few days. Before heading out to the US in a couple of weeks, Ruben will be doing some filming for and editing for the Fly Bikes video on his home turf. The entire etnies team is testing Ruben’s shoe, the Terranea, which will be in stores in June 2005.
Jamie Bestwick has been home in State College, PA working hard on honing his skills for the up coming contest season. He will be heading off to Thailand on the 23rd for a Tsunami relief demo with a bunch of other X games athletes including Bob Burnquist and Mat Hoffman to help raise money for Tsunami relief efforts. From there Jamie will be heading over to England to enter the BIKE 2005 vert contest.
Sergio Layos spent the end of last week up in the mountains above Madrid in Leon checking out a snowboard contest with some friends. He was also fortunate enough to test some new snowboards for his friend who has a distribution company and he rode a skatepark with some of the locals. On the way home, Sergio and his brother Angel stopped in Zamora to visit some friends. Other than that, Sergio and Angel have been working hard on helping their mom start her own small business.
Joe Rich had a nuts week for sure—a lot of fun having the SXSW festival in town, plenty of crazy shows to go see. He sessioned the T1 ramp a few times (in between rain showers) and also rode the Banana Farm ramp with the crew and was stoked to learn a few new moves.
Dave Freimuth returned home from Milwaukee from Kevin Porters Ratty Bike contest last weekend with John Heaton in tow, and, as usual, sessioned Area 51 skatepark. Dave Osato and Chad Degroot flew to Appleton and proceeded to tear Area 51 apart. Thursday morning was spent checking out thrift stores to find green goodies to properly celebrate St Patrick’s Day. Friday, Dave and the crew headed up to Davenport Iowa to check out the Front Brake Revolution contest at Rampage skatepark. The comp was already underway when the crew arrived Friday night, but on Saturday Dave Osato managed to school everyone to walk away with the victory. Needless to say, the posse celebrated Osato’s victory in the usual manner and Freimuth’s wife Patie has to be thanked for being the DD.
John Heaton headed out to Milwaukee for Kevin Porters Ratty Bike contest last week and he and his team mates got second place in the comp. From there John headed back to Appleton to hang with Dave Freimuth and Co. and ride Area 51. At the tail end of the week, John headed out to Davenport with Freimuth to check out the Front Brake Revolution which he was unable to compete in because he has no front brake, so it would honestly kinda defeat the purpose really…But he did get to ride the park with everyone and had a good time regardless. Sunday, John took a leisurely 11-hour drive home to Hamilton Ontario to cleanse his liver from the past two weeks.
Sandy Carson has been enjoying all the festivities with SXSW being in town, he has been shooting photos of many of the bands as well as videoing to help the bands that were in town for the festival. Sandy has also been getting footage of himself for possible upcoming projects or videos, just to have it. Rob Dolecki has been in town and shot a bunch of stuff of Sandy for RIDE BMX magazine, they sessioned the Banana Farm Ramp and actually found some new street spots in Austin if you can believe that. Beside the usual Austin going’s, on Sandy has been working on issue 46 of DIG BMX magazine, which is due out in a couple of months.
Byrnes kickin' back
Garrett Byrnes returned to LA last week after his six-week stay in Australia and had to scramble to get a bike together to go shoot photos for RIDE magazine’s Jeff Zielinski because he donated his to the hospitable folks down-under who put he and his girl up, loaned them a vehicle and also showed them around—it was the least he could do. Garrett flew home to New Jersey on Thursday to get some R&R in before spending his summer traveling like he always does.
