Mike Escamilla had quite a chill week in So-cal just riding at Ben Snowden’s backyard training facility getting ready for the coming year, honing his skills and getting everything dialed in. Mike also headed down to Tony Hawk’s house to attend a BBQ there and check out Tony’s new backyard cement skatepark. Mike also hung out with family this past weekend before heading out on his solo road trip up to Canada—first stop San Francisco. Mike’s 3rd shoe Rooftop 3 is in stores now.
Taj Mihelich was at Metro Jam in Toronto on March 4-6 but got real sick and couldn’t compete, he returned home to Austin to resume his work schedule at T1 and get well. Taj has been working overtime getting ready for “South by Southwest” the annual Austin music festival that happens each year. T1 supports some bands that will be attending the festival that consumes the whole of Austin for a week straight. There will be rock shows at all the bars and clubs in town as wells as shows at the T1 ramp. Taj and T1/etnies team mate Joe Rich rapped up final production of the latest T1 zine that this time is a little magazine like; it should be done in the next week or so. The T1 crew is getting hooked up with Skatelite through Taj who is sponsored by them, maybe a little T1 ramp expanding? Taj is a rock star. He gets recognized at Chili’s. Taj’s 3rd shoe the Roscoe is in stores now.
Ruben Alcantara is still in New Zealand with most of the Fly Bikes crew but will be coming home mid March. Everything has been going great and they have been getting plenty of footage and photos. Ruben has also been surfing quite a bit. He has been healing well after eating shit on a ramp at a skatepark where he took one to the chin and got six stitches a couple of weeks later.
Ruben’s first shoe the Terranea will be available in June and is currently being tested by various etnies team members to rave revues.
Jamie Bestwick spent last weekend out in California shooting a commercial for the upcoming five-stop NBC series that starts up in June in Cincinnati. Jamie was loving it! Doing 360’s over a car and countless beautiful scantily clad women, at times getting quite distracted. On a related note (not really) Jamie will be a dad around the same time as that first NBC contest. Jamie returned home to State college PA to hang with and take care of his pregnant wife Kerry and get back to the serious business of riding and getting ready for the up coming contest season, while sneaking off from time to time to shred his brand new snowboard on the nearby slopes wearing his bitchen ThirtyTwo snowboard boots.
Joe Rich is home in Austin and has been rapping up final production on the next not-so-zine-like zine for T1. It’s more like a maga-zine this time. He and T1 co-owner Taj Mihelich have been working hard on it for a while now. Joe has been riding plenty with all the locals and a few etnies teammates who live in Austin including Taj, Sandy Carson and Josh Stricker. Joe’s been working over at T1 while Taj was in Toronto for the Metro Jam and getting plenty done.
Sergio Layos has been chilling recovering from jetlag after returning from New Zealand about a week ago. He has been stoked to hang and be around for his brother Angel’s birthday, which Sergio and some friends threw a BBQ to celebrate. They also all went snowboarding at an indoor snowboard facility nearby in Madrid. It also helps to be home now because Sergio went and got himself a girl, and everyone knows how girls love BMXer’s being gone all the time? Not! Sergio is heading up to Barcelona in a few days to do some stuff with Oakley and is also planning a trip to Asturias with some friends while there to check out some cool riding spots.
John Heaton killed it and got 10th place at the Toronto Metro Jam two weeks ago with moves like wall ride to whips and a couple of newly acquired flairs. Following the jam, John shot photos for etnies at various spots around the Toronto area and northern NY before heading out to Milwaukee to shred the Kevin Porter Ratty BMX Jam at the 4 Season’s skatepark .Apparently John rode amazingly and nailed a perfect flair to double peg on a monster sub box during his run that apparently was not good enough for top three. John has been hanging with etnies team mate Dave Freimuth in Appleton for the remainder of the week shredding the Area 51 skatepark with all the locals including Dave and etnies flow rail shredder Brian Kachinsky.
Dave Freimuth rode real well at the Toronto Metro Jam two weeks ago, so much so that he won best trick during his run with a 270 to over icepick on a 4 foot backrail that he nailed first try much to the pleasure of the on looking crowd. He also pulled the best backflip bail that the world has ever seen at the end of his groups run, it’s a wonder he lived to tell the tale. Monday, Dave headed home to Appleton before jumping right back in his van to drive up to Milwaukee for the Kevin Porter Ratty BMX Jam which he rode in a had fun. Dave has been shredding Area 51 with the locals and hanging with etnies team mate John Heaton and taking care of his pregnant wife Patie. At the end of this week Dave will be heading up to Davenport, Iowa for the Front Brake Revolution Contest at Rampage skaterpark this coming weekend.
Josh Stricker drove all the way out to Philly to pick up his belongings a couple of weeks ago and turned right back around to Austin where he got himself a brand new place with some friends. He has been shredding and shooting plenty of pictures with etnies teammate Sandy Carson and photog extraordinaire Rob Dolecki
Garrett Byrnes enjoyed his final days in Australia with his girl Crystal shooting photos of him riding for 20/20 magazine. He also got some final surf sessions in where he saw a couple of sharks and some dolphins in the water. Before leaving, Garrett gave his bike away as well as anything else he had to offer (which in one case was actually the shirt off of his back) in appreciation for all the amazing generosity he received down there. Garrett flew into Los Angeles on Friday to hang with his girl in Santa Monica for a couple of days while getting a bike back together. He has been shooting pictures with RIDE BMX magazine this week and will be heading home to New Jersey on Thursday.
Sandy Carson finally got some peace and quiet, his parents went back home to Scotland so now it’s back to farting in front of his girl and letting the manners go out the window. Rob Dolecki has been in town so now it is Sandy’s turn to be the recipient of the photographs being taken. They went to the Bastrop pool in West Texas and also did some street sessions with etnies team mate Josh Stricker and a bunch of New York kids that were in town this past week. The T1 ramp got sessioned as usual by Sandy and etnies teammates Joe Rich and Taj Mihelich along with Sandy’s buddy Paul from Scotland. The South by Southwest music festival is in town, and Sandy is pretty involved with a lot of that and will probably be shooting lots of photos. As always, Sandy has been working on the next and every issue of DIG BMX magazine. Before anything gets going though Sandy is going camping.
