Happy New Year, peeps! I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays, and if you haven't had a chance to hit the slopes, you're missing out. There's some serious snow out there--especially in Northern Cali.
After getting pounded with over a gazillion feet of snow, almost every snowboard crew made their way up to Tahoe to battle it out for first dibs on rails, ledges, backcountry kickers, you name it. Some serious shredding was to be found. For some strange reason, the West Coast of the United States received over 15 feet of fresh over the last couple of weeks, while other parts of the globe such as Europe and Canada haven't been as fortunate. Maybe it has something to do with the Earth's axis being thrown off? Stranger things have happened...
Anyway, here's the latest regarding your favorite etnies Snow team riders...
Wille Yli-Luoma heard about the massive amount of snow the West Coast was getting, so as soon as the holidays were over, he jumped on a flight to hit-up Tahoe with the Mack Dawg crew and started filming right away. He's been up there shredding everyday, hitting up the backcountry and bagging a handful of shots. Wille reported that his crew has been waking up at the crack of dawn to get to the secret spots before anyone else. He will be concentrating on filming all year with Mack Dawg and the Volcom crew to lock down some serious footie.
Brothers John Jackson and Eric Jackson have been snowed in and stuck at June mountain. They’ve been trying to get out to start filming with Standard Films. Luckily, they made their way out and now they're in the backcountry with the Standard Crew, battling it out with the rest of the snowboard film crews.
Leanne Pelosi recently won the Slopestyle contest during the Grand Prix at Mt. Bachelor in Bend, Oregon early this month. Stomping a backside 720 in snowy conditions pretty much assured her the win. She also grabbed 2nd at the Vail Sessions last weekend--taking home a whopping $3,200 in the process! (Hey, that's ThirtyTwo hundred bucks to you and me!) Congratulations, Leanne! As always, Leanne kicked down 10% of her winning prize to celebrate with her friends at a local bar afterwards. Thanks also, Leanne, for getting everyone wasted! Always a pleasure. Leanne has also been concentrating not only on her contest runs, but filming everyday with Misschief Films. Whether on street rails or contest kickers or backcountry kickers, she's sure to have another successful year. Leanne will be riding the Breckenridge park this week to warm-up for the X Games, which are scheduled for later this month. Maybe she'll be voted for Rider of the Year this year. Keep your fingers crossed!
B-team amateur Laura Hadar took home $2,500 at the Vail Sessions this last weekend. Laura was hesitating on competing until everyone gave her so much grief she ended up entering at the last minute. Not so bad for a night of shredding. Congratulations, Laura! Yeah-iah!
Alexis Waite also competed in the Slopestyle contest at Mt. Bachelor, and took home $1,500 at the Vail Sessions this past weekend, as well. Lexi's been on the road following some of the contest circuits, as well as filming for Misschief Films. She's getting her shred on with the rest of the girls at Breckenridge, Colorado right now, warming up for the X Games.
Benji Ritchie recently signed a two-year agreement with Dragon Optics, where he'll be showcased in all of their major ad campaigns. He’s in Whistler right now getting ready to start filming. Unfortunately, the weather in Whistler isn’t all that great, so he and his crew are planning to head out to either Tahoe or Utah to capture some amazing riding. Benji will be concentrating on filming with the White Out crew this year. He reported that he's super stoked to be traveling and riding with good friends and anticipates another great year.
Janna Meyen is back in action charging the snow. She was recently seen in Utah visiting with some of her friends and attending the ThirtyTwo Boot Camp. She's back in Oregon riding everyday and getting ready for the X Games. Janna plans to concentrate on filming with the Volcom crew the entire season to lock down a solid video part. Welcome back, Janna!
Markku Koski is currently in Laax, Switzerland attending the European Open. He'll be competing in both Slopestyle and Pipe this week. Markku will be heading to Tahoe after that to start filming with Standard Films. He'll be in the States for a few weeks filming and shooting photos, and then head to Japan for the Toyota Big Air contest in late February.
Tyler Lepore has been in Vancouver, getting ready to start filming and shooting photos. His hard work has been paying off lately. He got the cover of TransWorld Snowboarding magazine (February 2005), and was most recently showcased in Snowboarders New Zealand article (March 2005). Good work, Ty!
