Baco-A-Go-Go Halloween Jam!

Nov 10 2004 / Wednesday

Area 51 Skatepark
Appleton, Wisconsin
October 30-31
The Baco crew likes to party, so one holiday they definitely look forward to every year is Halloween...and this year was no exception.Theres nothing better than a crew of good friends gathering together, riding their bikes, getting crazy and dressing up like a bunch of goofs with the rest of the Appleton҅and no one thinks twice about it.

The venue was Area 51 Skatepark in Appleton, Wisconsin, Dave Freimuths home park and town. Chad Degroot, DaveҒs partner in crime on Baco, came in to help make things run smoothly and bring the party favors. The Jam itself is actually secondary to the fun everyone has each year, but a lot of good stuff went down on an awesome course, regardless. Its hard to remember everything that happened in theIntermediate and Expert classes, but there were some guys who I would consider just about ready to turn pro in Expert, for sure--especially the first place finisher Eric Holley. This kid runs no brakes and was firing out all kinds of tech lip tricks on the raised mini, fully in control with quality riding--and he was even double trucking the box.

The Pro division was a treat for the masses in attendance. First there was BV, Brian Vowell, the master of everything hang-five. Then there was Quinn ғBling-Bling Semling, who is not well known outside of the Midwest, but whose actions speak louder than words, for sure. Kevin Porter sent himself on a quick visit to the hospital via a few 1080 attempts on a five-foot wide, eight-foot long box jump.On the final one, he took it straight to the back of the head. He was seeing stars (and Jesus) for a while. LetԒs not forget Brian Kachinski, the sub rail master (and master of all rails, actually), who put some solid runs together. Tony Mortenson (or the Hucker,Ӕ as Freimuth affectionately calls him) ran it full speed all day long with big transfers and quality lines.

John Heaton, who sported some huge 360 inverts over the spine, 360 whips over the box, huge no-handers and some good, fast lines, impressed the judges enough for a well-deserved 3rd.Home turf favorite Dave Freimuth destroyed the sub rail, and offered some good grind lines on the quarter to quarter transfer thingy, as well as some big ol whips. Just having home court advantage paid off for Dave, as he casually nabbed 2nd place for the day. Jeremiah Jones҅who knows where this guy comes from? Hes a quiet dude with screaming skills who rode out of the woodwork with bike flips on the box clean as a whistle, pedal-to-pedal no problem. Sub rail destroyer and 360 master Jeremiah made his mark on this day, as 1st place was his. (Along with a crap load of new admirers, to boot.)
John Heaton almost had Best Trick in the bag with a bar spin 180 transfer from a spine gapping over a rail to wedge. It was honestly pretty bad-ass. He was praying to hell that Josh Nenza didnҒt pull what he was trying on the sub rail, a 450 to ice pick. He tried it time and time again, yet every fall would result in him somehow landing on his feet, just like a cat. Then right before the buzzer, Josh nailed it, rode away clean and swiped that $1000 prize right out of Heatons hands. John was bummed, but also stoked for Josh. John sure could have used the cash for some new reclining seats for his VW. Pumpkin smashing rules!
