etnies Rules Backyard Jam Top 5!

Oct 28 2004 / Thursday

Once again, BMX riding was pushed to new levels at the etnies Backyard Jam in Derby, England on October 22-24, 2004. In front of 1000 spectators, the etnies team ruled the Pro category with a Top 5 crew consisting of Rooftop in 2nd, Jamie Bestwick in 3rd and John Heaton nabbing 4th place. Included in the top 10 was also etnies Sergio Layos and Taj Mihelich, placing 6th and 7th.

Over 100 Experts and over 40 Professional riders annihilated the Derby street course, with Van Homan emerging the eventual victor among some super close competition. Corey Martinez once again took the Best Trick top prize, this time for an insane barspin to icepick to barspin back in on the top of the wall ride vert wall. Anyone who attended would agree judging was no enviable responsibility, with riders continually throwing down moves that were quite simply off the hook.

The event featured a strong presence from etnies, with both their U.S. and U.K. team riders shredding. Brian Vowell blew away the crowd with his tech wizardy, Ruben Alcantara, as usual, displayed all the original lines and flow of a master, and 2003 Derby winner Taj Mihelich was going all out again, nailing a fufanu on top of the vert wall section of the wall ride.

4th place went to etnies Canadian rider John Heaton, who was going huge, airing the wall ride and landing a flair to tire tap on the strange wedged sub box above the 6 ft. quarter that became known as the ғshed roof. Former Derby local turned vert riding superstar Jamie Bestwick obviously went ludicrously high on the 10 ft. quarter, but also surprised many with an array of more technical moves. Riding only his second street competition in 10 years, Jamie took 3rd to the delight of the crowd and his sponsors. Taking 2nd place overall was another etnies man, Mike ԓRooftop Escamilla, who had clean runs and big tricks to boot. Rooftop clearly lived up to his name, peg grinding the wall ride from the quarter and pulling off two huge flair (backflip 180) transfers.

The three-day event attracted an even wider array of UK television media this time, including CBBC Exchange, BBC East Midland News, ITV Central News, Boomerang / C4 Freesports, Chilli Media, Extreme Channel, Origin and even the Disney Channel, who featured an interview with etniesԒ Jamie Bestwick.

Big thanks to etnies, A4 Distribution, Seventies, the City of Derby and all others who helped make this such a successful event once again. See you in 2005!
