Etnies Bowlmasters In The Cradle
May 16-18, 2003
Etnies proved its commitment to skateboarding once again with the second edition of the etnies Bowlmasters at The Cradle skatepark in Brixlegg, Austria. This brand-new concrete park was built in 2001 by Dreamland Skateparks (who have also built many amazing skateparks in the Pacific Northwest, USA). An overview of The Cradle is available at www.skatethecradle.com.
Friday was qualification day for the over fifty skateboarders who entered. On Saturday, it was time for round one. Thirty-two riders competed in eight heats of four riders for the Bowlmasters title. Sixteen riders went on to the quarterfinals in the afternoon. After an amazing start for the competition, it was time to party that night at a castle with live music and hip-hop tunes until sunrise.
Luckily, the semi-finals started in early afternoon the next day, and, after that, the six finalists were chosen. In the finals round, each skateboarder got a first run of 45 seconds, followed by a ten-minute jam session. Etnies rider Oli Buergin from Switzerland went for Best Trick with a 540 tail-grab over the hip. Best Line, for sure, went to Ben Krahn with his different style of skateboarding.
Emerica rider Manuel Palacios took the $4000 Euro prize money for 1st place back home to Spain. Hundreds of spectators watched the thirty-one year old win the bowl finals doing kickflips in the over-vert section of the Cradle. Ben Krahn from Portland, Oregon placed 2nd, skating the longest and most technical lines of all the finalists. This twenty-nine year old Emerica team rider used the whole park and did tricks no one else thought of. Last yearҒs winner, etnies rider Brian Patch from California, got third with his huge method airs over the hip.
