Hot in Austin, Cold Everywhere Else

Apr 14 2003 / Monday

Rambo, I mean Mike Escamilla, has been spending his time doing arts and crafts, making crazy hunting knives for himself and Etnies surf team manager and good friend, Brandon Lillard. You would be surprised at how good these things actually turned out. Mike has also been filming with etnies staff cameraman Mike Manzoori for a Props commercial at a pool up in LA. He also recently rode at the newly re-furbished Primo ramps on his killer neon bike. Besides that, Mike has been spending time with his wife Jodi and daughter Haley. On Thursday, he attended good friend Kevin Lymans (Goldenvoice, Warped Tour, Lollapalooza) birthday party.

After coming back from a well-deserved get-away, Taj Mihelich returned to some nice weather in Austin, allowing for some good outdoor sessions. The T1 ramp has been shut down to the general public for a while so that he and close friends can enjoy the ramps to themselves. Taj has been riding with etnies teammate Sandy Carson all over town, as well as spending long hours at the office, one day till 6:00 a.m. (this boy is a workaholic).

Joe Rich, Ruben Alcantara, Nate Wessel and Garrett Byrnes have left South Africa and moved on to Greece, where they have been snowboarding and riding some interesting new terrain. They also visited some ruins that are thousands of years old. The guys left for Spain on April 7 in preparation for the Spanish and European leg of the T1 World Tour.

John Heaton is freezing his nuts off in Toronto! To alleviate some of his frustration, John drove to Wisconsin to hang out with MacNeil / etnies teammate Dave Freimuth and get footage for the upcoming MacNeil video. John and Dave were doing tricks out of a bank onto the side of DaveҒs mini-van. John has been getting ready to head out to England for the etnies Backyard Jam, as well as a road trip for his clothing sponsors Little Devil and a contest in France called Fise.

Josh Stricker is on spring break from school right now, so hes stoked. He has been out riding a bunch around town and traveling quite a bit in the last couple of weeks--going up to Binghamton, New York and then onto Providence, Rhode Island, as well as Boston. Josh rode Van HomanҒs new garage ramp facility thats modeled after Mat BeringerҒs in Utah. Josh says it is one of the tightest ramp configurations youve ever seen.

Dave Freimuth had etnies / MacNeil teammate John Heaton in town to ride with last week. It has been pretty cold in Appleton, Wisconsin, so Dave and friends headed out to Milwaukee to go ride some indoor parks. Dave learned a trick he has been working on for a long time, an alley-oop feeble grind to backwards Manuel, but failed to get it on film.

Sandy Carson rode some new downhill trails in town that were fun, which makes the lazy riders really happy. Sandy has been working on Dig magazine, riding with etnies teammate Taj Mihelich at the T1 ramp, as well as at the Skatepark of Austin. The weather is getting hot in Austin.

Nate Hanson has been stoked that the Primo ramps have finally been finished. He has been riding there on a daily basis, as well as riding some street. Lately, Nate has been working on his truck and his brotherҒs truck and also working at Tip / Primo.

Brian Terada has been working at the bike store in Camarillo. He has also been riding at Skate Street in Ventura. Brian has been scoping out spots to film for etnies commercials with etnies staff filmer Mike Manzoori. Brian shot photos with Ride magazine's Jeff Zeilinski last week at the Primo ramps in Carson, and is also getting ready for the etnies Backyard Jam on April 12-13.

Edwin Delarosa has also been getting ready for the etnies Backyard Jam. He has been out riding in both Brooklyn and NYC, as well as an indoor park not too far from his house.

Mike Griffin had one cast taken off of his hand and another put on, as well as the stitches taken out of his hip and hand. There has been almost ten inches of snow in the last couple of days in Bethlehem. Mike has been hanging with his son Xavier.
