GROM Series Championships

Jan 23 2003 / Thursday

By Andy Wilcox

The United Skateboarding Association hosted the inaugural GROM Series Championships on November 16-17, 2002 at the ESPN X-Games Skatepark in the Franklin Mills Mall, Pennsylvania. For the first time ever, the little rippers got their chance to shine--no longer standing shyly on the deck, fully padded and waiting for the big guys to let them go. This was their contest and nobody was holding back. If you've never been to a GROM Contest before, you're missing some truly unique skating. You're more likely to see Miller flips and acid drops than a thousand kickflips and crooked grinds.

Beginner Division
These kids go for broke--camera or not. Take Josh Orr, for example. This dude twisted his knee something awful, stretched ligaments and all that stuff. The doctors said it would be six weeks before he could skate. Josh said twelve hours and the next day he was skating in the finals. That's heart.

Intermediate Division
Over the course of the weekend, three demos were held. The first featured the guys from Seed, a relatively new company from New Jersey. Later that day, the 5Boro guys rolled through to tear shit up. On the final day of the contest, the Zoo York crew was there to break it off. While the demos took place, the groms found a spot on the deck, boards at their feet, knowing it won't be long before they're ones doing the skating with kids looking up to them.

Here's the top ten, and just like every USA event, every kid goes home with plenty of stuff.
