Top Rankin' for Etnies Photographers

Apr 18 2002 / Thursday

Etnies, world class skateboard footwear has joined forces with world
renowned photographer Rankin, to devise a photo challenge for young up and
coming international photographers.
Four photographers were short-listed by Rankin and Etnies to take part in
the challenge, each for their individual style and creative perspective.
Each photographer has been set an individual brief to submit shots using
limited edition Etnies product with their own unique interpretation.
Rankin and Etnies Art Director Pete Hellicar, will select the winner whose
work will be featured in a 6-8 page article in the June 2002 issue of Dazed
& Confused magazine. Etnies will also work with the winning photographer
for their future international advertising campaigns.
All short-listed candidates work will be displayed in the Dazed Gallery
at the end of May and will then move to a gallery in Berlin.
This project is a continuation of Etnies commitment to support young creative
artists, following a similar concept last year with artist Claire Griffiths.
Rankin comments; "It's refreshing to work with a brand that
is investing in the creativity & development of young photographers."
Pete Hellicar, Etnies comments; "As Etnies roots are in skateboarding
and the creative nuances of urban culture, we felt that it was important
to support other creative outlets. Working with photographers is a natural
step for the brand."
The short listed photographers for the concept are;
Ryan McGinley, based in New York who has had several solo gallery
exhibitions in cities including Berlin & New York and has just published
a book which will be hitting the shelves world wide very soon!
Ryan has worked for several magazines including Vice and The Fader. He was
selected for his ability to reflect the wild side of youth in his photography
and his anarchic style.
Cappello is also based in New York and is a self taught photographer
who has shot for many highly acclaimed magazines including Dazed & Confused,
Tokion, Fader, Nylon and many more. Kenneth's photographic style is very
raw which perfectly reflects the attitude of skateboarding.
Dirk Seiden Schwan, from Germany is based in Paris and started out
working as a photographer's assistant and has now had his worked published
regularly in magazines including Nylon (USA), Crash (France) and Self Service
Dirk has an inherent sense of what will make a photo interesting and his
style is packed with energy which is a perfect fit for the Etnies core brand
Finally Lisa Byrne originally from Northern Ireland and based in
London approaches photography from a fine art background. She has had exhibitions
in Belfast and New York and one coming up early next Year in LA. Lisa's
use of colour and abstract eye gives her the ability to make every day objects
visually stimulating.
