Markku Makes History at the Open

Mar 20 2002 / Wednesday

Markku Koski is on
the verge of legend statusanyone who witnessed his riding at the US
Open will agree. The Etnies team rider displayed a quiver of large, technical
tricks including back to back inverted 7Œs and an inverted 1080!
Fifteen foot straight airs seemed like the norm at this years pipe
show, and just about everyone had a 900 or a 1080 up their sleeve. Markku
couldnҒt stop there, and decided to do onetwo better when he
unleashed the first-ever 1440 in competition! 1440!
Markku made all the on-lookerŒs jaws drop when he stomped a 1260 in
the quarterfinals. After a ten-foot air to fakie, Markku spun the 1260 clean
and landed clean. Not only was the trick out of hand, he was dripping style
the whole time no ballerina steez, no huck for the buck steez, just
vintage Markku.
In the finals, all eyes were on the Finnish star when he upped the ante
one more time. Markku set the record straight with an attempt on a 1440.
The second time Markku brought out the big spin, he set up with a frontside
three bringing him into his last hit switch. He set his body up for the
Cab spin and elevated about ten feet out. It was crazy to see him go so
high and spin so quick while still making it look good. Markku reverted
a bit on the landing, but came close enough to let us know he֒ll own
it soon. Markkus solid riding and heart-stopping progressive tricks
landed him a second place finish in the event.
Congratulations Markku, from your Etnies team, on making history at the
Open!
