Taj Takes Backyard Jam

Nov 4 2002 / Monday

• This past weekend was the final Etnies Backyard Jam in Derby, England. A huge chunk of the Etnies BMX crew was there to compete, and some, like Mike Escamilla and Joe Rich, were showing support from the sidelines due to injuries. Under the watchful eye of team manager John Povah, the large Etnies team presence included Ruben Alcantara, Garret Byrnes, Josh Stricker, Nate Wessel, Leif Vallin, Edwin Delarosa, Josh Heaton and some other guy named Taj Mihelich. There was also a strong presence of Etnies international riders from the UK and Spain. Not only did every one of these guys destroy the course, but some of them decided to spread the destruction to their bodies! After an amazing jam format, the scores were tabulated and Taj came in 1st (like there was any doubt!) and Heaton 2nd! Congrats to all the Etnies domestic and international team riders.

• As with the Hastings Backyard, I felt Derby went really well and was greeted by all the riders and spectators with great anticipation and enthusiasm. With every passing Backyard Jam, the events have gained momentum and next year promises to be even more awesome. For years, the Backyard Jams had a huge following until 1997, when the Seventies family decided to put it on hiatus. Fast forward to 2002-- time for a comeback. If the Backyard Jams are going to be anything like the ones of the late '90s, it's going to get insane.
